MICHIGAN CITY | A Michigan City man accused of beating to death a 4-year-old boy was sentenced to 40 years in prison, officials said.
Jimmy Isbell was sentenced after he pleaded guilty to neglect of a dependent. He's accused of severely beating Julian Bowen Hurley with his hands and a belt, officials said.
Julian died Jan. 14, 2011 at Franciscan St. Anthony Health in Michigan City, and an autopsy indicated bruises covered most of his body, officials said.
Isbell was not Julian's father but had custody of him from January 7, 2011 to January 14, 2011, according to the LaPorte County prosecutor's office. Isbell told investigators he began to hit Julian because he wouldn't eat his food, and the child said he wanted to eat snacks or junk food.
LaPorte County Prosecutor Bob Szilagyi said in 2011 that Isbell had custody of Julian as well as his 7-year-old brother because his mother was in jail.
According to a press release from the LaPorte County prosecutor's office, Judge Kathleen Lang took into account Isbell's previous criminal history. Lang also took into account that Isbell withheld medical treatment for the child.
