MICHIGAN CITY | A man died in a Michigan City house fire Thursday morning.

Scott Nix, 40, was found in a bed inside the home in the 200 block of Green Street on the city's north end.

Michigan City Fire Department spokesman Mark Baker said a husband and wife and two children managed to get out of the burning structure on their own power and without serious injury.

Why Nix was not able to make it out remains under investigation, he said.

Baker said the cause of the blaze was undetermined but still being investigated with help from the Indiana State Fire Marshal's Office.

Firefighters reported hearing a smoke detector going off when they arrived, authorities said.

Baker said damage to the one and a half story home was moderate to heavy.

The fire occurred about 3 a.m.
