MICHIGAN CITY | A man killed when he stepped in front of a semi truck in Michigan City last week has been identified.

William Schroeder, 76, stepped out from behind a car into the path of a semi about 8 a.m. Friday at U.S. 20 and Ohio Street.

LaPorte County Chief Deputy Coroner Mark Huffman said Schroeder was released from jail in Hammond last month and caught a ride from a cellmate to Michigan City.

Huffman said Schroeder was living in the woods just north and east of U.S. 421 and U.S. 20.

Schroeder once lived near Calumet City. Prior to coming to Michigan City, he had a roommate in Hammond who took him in he was homeless, Huffman said.
