MICHIGAN CITY | Visit Michigan City LaPorte Convention and Visitors Bureau in cooperation with US F-1 Powerboat have announced the final schedule of events for the upcoming Maple City Grand Prix on May 31, June 1 & 2, 2013.

This year's sponsors are Best Western Plus LaPorte Hotel & Conference Center, Blue Heron Inn, Clubhouse Bar & Grill, Exit 1 Reality, Indiana University Health LaPorte, Jiffy Lube LaPorte, LaPorte Park & Recreation, Michigan City Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep Ram, NIPSCO, Serious Fun/Sonny’s Body Shop, Seven Restaurant, Spire Farm to Fork, TCB Manufacturing and WLOI/WCOE Radio Stations.

The F1 Powerboat is an international motor boat competition for powerboats. It is the highest class of inshore powerboat racing in the world, and as such, with it sharing the title of F1, is similar to Formula One car racing. Each race lasts approximately 45 minutes following a circuit marked out in a selected stretch of water, usually a lake, river, or sheltered bay.

Inaugurated in 1981, F1 powerboat racing is a Grand Prix style event, in which teams compete around the world each season. In the 2012 season, a total of 28 drivers and 11 teams entered at least one race, with 18 boats competing full-time. The races take place along a track of approximately 350 meters with multiple turns, over which the boats can reach 250 kilometers per hour (155 mph). The races are longer than most powerboat races at approximately 45 minutes, but still shorter than many car races. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F1_Powerboat_World_Championship

The boats, their owners and the race teams will be at Soldiers Memorial Park in LaPorte starting as early as Thursday, May 30th. Boat testing and time trials will begin on Friday and Saturday and the race will be run on Sunday, June 2nd on Stone Lake.

This year, the dry pit area for these F-1 Powerboats will be scattered throughout the Stone Lake beach area, and will be open FREE to spectators to see the boats and teams up close starting on Friday.

The best FREE spectator viewing for Race Day on Sunday will be on the beach and along Lake Shore Drive. FREE parking will be available at the LaPorte County Fairgrounds, 2581 W State Road 2, LaPorte, IN 46350, with free shuttle bus service to the race site on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Also, there is FREE parking at Newport Landing, Truesdell Avenue and Hoelocker, LaPorte, IN 46350. Newport Landing is within walking distance of the race site. Let Visit Michigan City LaPorte CVB do the driving as you sit back and relax in an air conditioned motor coach. These buses will run continuously between the Fairgrounds and Newport Landing and the park entrance all three days. On Friday the transportation begins at 1pm-11pm, Saturday 9am-11pm and Sunday 9am-5pm.

In addition to welcoming the general public to view the race from the shoreline, there will be special VIP lunch/seating on the beach on race day.
