A medical helicopter landed on U.S. 20 near Michigan City to transport an elderly man seriously hurt in a single-vehicle crash.

James Downs, 85, was witnessed driving fast about 11 a.m. on County Line Road at 400 North, according to LaPorte County authorities.

His 1999 Ford Ranger pickup veered off the road and struck several trees.

The Michigan City-area resident was driven by ambulance to the helicopter and flown to a South Bend hospital with several possible bone fractures, police said.

LaPorte County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Jim Sosinski said a statement from the driver, who lives just south of Michigan City, could not be obtained due to his condition.

A diabetic reaction is thought to have played a role in the crash based on input gathered from paramedics, he said.

Downs was wearing a seatbelt, police said.

The highway was shutdown just long enough to allow the helicopter to land, board Downs and take off.
