MICHIGAN CITY | Members Advantage Credit Union has awarded two $1,000 scholarships for members pursuing a college education. Theresa Saenz, a Michigan City High School graduating senior, received the Leona Bruno Scholarship, and the Gail Walker Scholarship has been awarded to Shubhra Murarka, a freshman at the University of Chicago.

Saenz, the daughter of Jerry and Laura Saenz, plans to study engineering at Purdue University’s Honor College this fall. She is graduating with highest distinction at MCHS with a GPA of 4.0.

“I want to work to help the environment in some capacity,” she shared.

The Trail Creek resident, a National Merit Scholar Finalist, received the MCHS Student of the Year award by the Michigan City Exchange Club. She also received the MCHS Alpha Award for Japanese her freshman through junior years and the English Alpha Award as a sophomore.

Saenz was a member of the Japanese Olympiad team for three years, and this year served as captain. The team won first place statewide in 2012 and this year placed third in the state. She is yearbook Editor in Chief and served as section editor while a junior.

Saenz played softball throughout her high school career. She was junior varsity team captain as a sophomore, and varsity team captain this year. She lettered her sophomore through senior years.

Her community service includes tutoring students in math at the Michigan City Public Library, volunteering at Barker Mansion and helping with the Washington Park beach clean up. She has participated in Leadership LaPorte County for the past two years.

Shubhra Murarka, a Michigan City resident, is the daughter of Madhukar and Krishna Murarka. A freshman at the University of Chicago, she is contemplating a double major in physics and English since her future plans may include becoming a doctor or a professor.

Murarka graduated in 2012 from La Lumiere School, and currently carries a 3.3 GPA at the University of Chicago. She is active with the South Asian Student Association, a cultural student club on campus, and is applying to be on the student club’s board next year.

In the biological division of the University of Chicago, Murarka is completing work-study in the neurobiology lab where she works as a student general technician helping doctoral graduate students with experiments and other lab duties.

Murarka’s community service while in college includes volunteering for “Art Should,” in which University of Chicago students create after school art programs for students in Chicago and South Bend elementary schools where lack of funding has discontinued art programs.

The Leona Bruno Scholarship was awarded in memory of the first manager of Members Advantage Credit Union, while the Gail Walker Scholarship was created in 2010 in memory of a former board member. Both winners received their scholarships based on scholastic excellence, personal integrity, active participation in and service to their schools as well as their contributions to their community.

Applicants for the scholarships must be members of Members Advantage Credit Union. For the Leona Bruno Scholarship, students must be attending a high school and plan to further their education, entering a college or trade school the following fall after graduation. The Gail Walker Scholarship is awarded to a high school senior, college freshman or college sophomore who has held a job or jobs in their community and is continuing their education.
