LAPORTE COUNTY | Minutes after police received a 911 call about a possible intoxicated driver, the motorist died in a head-on collision with a semitrailer on U.S. 421.
Jeffrey Koza, 41, of the Michigan City area, was pronounced dead at the scene of blunt force trauma, LaPorte County Coroner John Sullivan said.
Koza was driving north in the southbound lane of U.S. 421 about 3 a.m. when he and the oncoming semi collided head-on in front of Purdue University North Central, LaPorte County police said.
Koza had a blood alcohol content almost three times the legal limit for driving, police said.
Just minutes before the collision, a call had been placed to 911 about a possible intoxicated motorist, Sullivan said. The caller said the driver had hit a guard rail along the two-lane highway at Snyder Road, Sullivan said.
The driver of the semi truck, Daniel Buskirck, 54, of Portage, was not injured, police said.
