MICHIGAN CITY | A police officer was placed on paid administrative leave after shooting a man during a scuffle Wednesday night, officials said.

Indiana State Police are investigating the Michigan City police officer's actions after the officer allegedly shot a 19-year-old man, according to a state police news release.

Two Michigan City police officers pulled over a 2011 Chevrolet Malibu for a traffic violation on Welnetz Road about 5:50 p.m. Wednesday.

While conducting the traffic stop, one of the four occupants of the car fled the area on foot. One of the officers chased him into an unlocked, occupied residence at the apartments near Salem Court, police said.

The officer attempted to take Daniel Sherrod Jr. into custody and engaged in a scuffle with him, the news release states.

Sherrod, of Michigan City, attempted to “remove the officer's weapon,” according to the release.

The officer fired at Sherrod and struck him in the abdomen, but the man continued to flee and ran about a fourth of a mile before officers found him in the nearby apartments closer to Dody Street, police said.

Sherrod was rushed to Franciscan St. Anthony Health hospital in Michigan City and then airlifted to South Bend for treatment, police said.

Michigan City police referred all questions to state police, who declined to identify the officer. An investigation involving a police officer can take weeks to complete and no further details were available, according to the news release.
