A Michigan City man is serving a 20-year prison sentence for the beating death of a retired teacher.
Christian Mansfield received the maximum sentence last week in LaPorte Superior Court 1 for Class B felony voluntary manslaughter.
He originally was charged with murder, which carries between a 20- to 50-year sentence.
Mansfield was 19 when he killed 66-year old Henry Whitten at the retired teacher's home in the 500 block of East 8th Street.
According to investigators, Whitten stopped and offered a ride to Mansfield along with money to perform odd jobs at his home.
LaPorte County Prosecutor Bob Szilagyi said when the two arrived there was evidence to show Whitten came on to Mansfield sexually before the defendant repeatedly beat Whitten with his bare hands.
Szilagyi said a plea agreement was struck because of evidence that presented too much uncertainty about landing a conviction at trial.
"We determined this was the best resolution to the matter," said Szilagyi.
