A Michigan City man was killed Monday when his compact car was broadsided by a semitrailer.
Javier Arteaga, 28, died instantly of massive internal injuries.
"It was a non-survival type crash," said LaPorte County Coroner John Sullivan.
Arteaga was northbound on U.S. 35 about 9:30 a.m. when hit by a semi eastbound on U.S. 20.
Sullivan said it's possible one of the drivers ran a red light but investigators were still trying to determine whether it was the victim or truck driver who may have disregarded the traffic signal.
LaPorte County police Major John Boyd said the highway was restricted to one lane in each direction for several hours.
It took firefighters an extended amount of time to free the body from the mangled 2004 Saturn Ion.
A steel coil that fell off the flatbed trailer of the semi involved in the crash also had to be recovered, police said.
The truck driver, Ivan Hickmott, 79, of Watervliet, Mich., was not injured, police said.
