The Michigan City Police Department has a goal to have 10,000 followers of the department on Facebook.
More than 9,000 people currently receive Facebook postings about things such as crimes that occurred, wanted individuals and road closings.
Michigan City Officer Royce Williams said a goal of 10,000 followers by Dec. 15 was set partly because of the success in solving crimes from tips received through Facebook and information sent out to the public about upcoming road closings.
"It kind of exceeded our expectations," said Williams, who said the department's Facebook page was created in 2010.
One way Facebook helps solve crimes is from postings of crime suspect photos that someone might recognize and send a return message with the identity of that person.
To become a follower, Williams said go to the MCPD Facebook page and click ''like.''
