MICHIGAN CITY | The new art exhibit at the LaPorte County Convention & Visitors Bureau Gallery will feature sculpture and paintings by John Mullin and paintings by some of the members of the Michigan City Art League.

John Mullin is a graduate of Chesterton High School, he holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (BFA) from Indiana-Purdue University and is a graduate of John Herron Art Institute in Indianapolis. He served 2 years military service during the Vietnam War and was stationed in Korea. John also studied one year at the University of Hawaii learning bronze casting. He studied at the Academia de Belle Arte (Academy of Fine Arts) and at the Villa Schifanoia, both in Florence, Italy. He received a Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture (MFA) from Rosary College in River Forest, Illinois.

Mr. Mullin has a long teaching career at schools like: Shapley School International in Florence, Italy-Sculpture, Valparaiso University-Sculpture, Purdue Northwest-Advertising Art & Watercolor, Indiana University Northwest-Cartooning, and Chesterton Art Center-Drawing, Watercolor, Art History.

For 25 years Mr. Mullin has owned and operated Mullins Designs which is a graphic design and sign company. Mr. Mullin has been President of the Chesterton Art Center for 20 years. His works of art are on display in several foreign countries, at the Chicago Stock Exchange, in libraries, churches, schools, and in many private homes. He had the opportunity while in Italy to study under some of the best teachers the country had to offer and he saw first-hand the greatest art ever produced.

The Michigan City Art League will be featuring an eclectic variety of styles, mediums, subjects and sizes. Works featured in this display are by; Barbara DeBernardo, Mary Bolinger, Sue Hughes, Rose Petersen, Sue Oestreich, Bunny Dimke, Lisa Brown, Helen Kwiecien, Cathy Kissinger, Betty Thomas and Bill Cavalier.

The Michigan City Art League (MCAL) has supported and promoted local and area artists through workshops and classes offered in the many mediums that artists find for self-expression, since 1932. For 81 years MCAL, offers classes to novice as well as experienced artist in many different mediums. Classes are held for 12 weeks in the spring and 12 weeks in the fall in their studio located in the former St. Mary's Elementary School in Michigan City.

Spring classes begin on Tuesday, March 5, and run through Tuesday, May 21 from 6:30pm-9pm. Instructors for the spring classes include Julia Holmaas, watercolorist, George Kassal, photography, John Fanson, mixed mediums, Scott Schwaller, acrylic, and a special demonstration by Kristy Kutch in color pencil.

And, last but not least, author Cynthia Ogorek will hold a book signing on March 3 from 2pm-4pm. Ms. Ogorek is a published author, public speaker, history advocate and preservationist. Since 2003 her company, The Public Historian, has promoted history through writing, tours, seminars and exhibits throughout the Calumet Region of Illinois and Indiana.
