There will be no fireworks this year in Michigan City.

Mayor Ron Meer earlier this year decided against the city putting on the fireworks display, which annually has been held a week after July 4 as part of the Summerfest activities.

Meer felt the $50,000 expense, because of the city's tight budget, was best used elsewhere.

However, Meer left open the possibility of having fireworks if enough donations were raised.

There were efforts to raise money, but Meer wanted the fireworks moved to July 4, while organizers of Summerfest wanted no change in the date.

Meer said he favored moving the fireworks to July 4 because of security and safety issues created by large crowds from outsiders coming here when no other community hosts fireworks.

"It became dangerous in some situations and it was very difficult to manage," said Meer.
