MICHIGAN CITY  | The movie "Black Fish" will be offered through a collaboration between Purdue University North Central's Odyssey Arts and Cultural Events Series and Michigan City Public Library. The showing is free and open to the public.

"Black Fish" will be shown at 2 p.m. March 16 at the Michigan City Public Library, 100 E. Fourth St.

The film is rated PG-13 for disturbing and violent images.

The documentary "Black Fish" tells the story of Tilikum, a 12,000-pound orca implicated in the deaths of three people. This film studies the existence of Tilikum and the lives of marine animals captured for exhibit at theme parks and attractions. While the film gives an admittedly one-sided view of the issue, it also opens discussion of the treatment of the species and the disruption of a life spent living in thousands of miles of ocean for one confined to a theme park. Orcas have no record of attacks on humans in the wild.

The documentary looks at the deaths of the trainers, while attempting to understand if there is a link between the orca's behavior and his treatment in captivity. Included are details of the physical and mental distress of the captive orcas, with an observation likening their captivity to trapping a human in a bathtub. "The New York Times" describes the film's most harrowing moment comes during an interview with a former whale hunter who recalls the traumatic capture of whale calves and the howls of their mothers - something that haunts him to this day.

Purdue University North Central Odyssey Arts and Cultural Events Series features various events throughout the year. A complete schedule of events can be found Call (219) 785-5200, ext. 5593.
