Purdue Extension helps young moms have a healthy baby
MICHIGAN CITY/LAPORTE | Have a Healthy Baby is the first program in Purdue Extension's Moms Together series. HHB is a research-based curriculum taught by trained, caring educators from Purdue Extension, Jody Kutch, FNP Assistant, and Dunebrook, Jennifer Olson, Community Partners Manager, PSUPP Coordinator.
Young pregnant or parenting mothers (ages 15-19) who attend HHB will learn helpful information about achieving a healthy lifestyle and pregnancy. Topics include:
1) The importance of a balanced diet and an active lifestyle during pregnancy.
2) How to achieve a healthy pregnancy weight gain.
3) The danger of food-borne illness and tips to protect yourself during pregnancy.
4) The best methods for feeding the baby.
5) The consequences of smoking, drinking, and drugs during pregnancy.
Kim Eldridge of MDwise and Monica Cavinder of Covering Kids and Families will talk with the moms about the importance of applying for and renewing health insurance coverage. Information about how to enroll in Hoosier Healthwise and the Healthy Indiana Plan will be provided.
HHB is being offered in two locations:
Michigan City at The Bridge on Feb. 28, March 6 and 20 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
LaPorte at the State Street Community Church on March 13 and 27, April 17 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Mom's Together offers a safe atmosphere where young pregnant or parenting mothers (ages 15-19) can share experiences, support one another and build the self-confidence needed to be the best mother they can be. The program offers resources, hands-on parenting activities, health and safety information, healthy eating tips and much more. Continued participation earns free books, toys and more for mom and baby! The program is free and childcare is provided! Join us for fun, friendship and learning at either our Michigan City or LaPorte location. The Mom's Together program meets approximately two times a month with special events one time per month on selected Saturdays.
