MICHIGAN CITY | Authorities are hoping science can shed light on the identity of human remains found Friday in a wooded area west of Michigan City.

LaPorte County Chief Deputy Coroner Mark Huffman said Monday samples from the decomposed remains have been submitted to the Indiana State Police laboratory for DNA testing. Huffman said he will also transport the remains to a forensic pathologist in Tippecanoe County later in the week.

Originally, he was going to have the remains immediately examined by a forensic anthropologist. However, he chose to have the initial examination performed by a forensic pathologist, instead, to try and come up with the identity, gender and other answers like cause of death in a quicker time frame.

"We're going to find out what the forensic pathologist can find out for us first," Huffman said.

Huffman said the decomposed remains were found Friday in a wooded area about 50 yards east of County Line Road at Chandler Road near The Pines just inside the LaPorte County line.

He would not disclose the condition of the remains.

The Michigan City Police Department has taken the lead in the investigation and Monday was not shedding much light on the discovery.

"It's an ongoing investigation," Michigan City Police Detective Bureau Commander Lt. Cary Brinkman said.

Brinkman would also not reveal what led to the discovery and whether the remains were out in the open or in the ground.

Brinkman would not say if any link is between the remains and the disappearance of a Michigan City woman reported missing in August after she was last seen nearby in The Pines.

"Things have to be verified," Brinkman said.

The hope is that DNA testing can shed light on the identity of the deceased and other clues. Huffman said it will take several weeks before receiving any results from the DNA analysis or the forensic examination.
