MICHIGAN CITY | A man working on the installation of a new roof at a Michigan City school fell through the roof Friday morning and was taken away by ambulance.
Emergency responders were called about 7:30 a.m. to Elston Middle School where the man landed on the stage in the gymnasium, a fall of about "two to three stories," said Michigan City Schools Associate Superintendent Javier Botana.
Botana said a new surface started being installed on the flat roof in July and was not yet close to being completed.
Michigan City Fire Chief Ronnie Martin said the man fell about 30 feet through a ventilation hole in the roof.
The man works for Midland Engineering in South Bend, the contractors for the project.
The company was not releasing the man's name or making any comment about what happened.
Botana said students were already in class when the mishap occurred, and he isn't aware of any witnesses.
Botana said he was notified by a member of the school's maintenance department who came across the man on the stage.
"There were no children or staff anywhere near the incident," said Botana.
