Travel on a stretch of U.S. 20 was temporarily restricted Sunday when 50,000 pounds of onions wound up spilling from an overturned semi truck near Michigan City.
According to LaPorte County police, Rustam Rodzhabow, 29, was on a ramp just 1 a.m. Sunday leading from Interstate 94 to U.S. 20.
A witness said it appears he was traveling too fast causing his load to shift and rig to overturn, according to police.
His load of bagged onions wound up in the eastbound lanes.
The truck driver from Connecticut told officers he lost control when he locked up his brakes to avoid another vehicle.
He sustained what was believed to be a minor injury to his leg or foot, said police.
