LAPORTE COUNTY | A Wanatah man who allegedly caused a crash with a semi on U.S. 30 then tried hiding from police was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving.
Michael McLauchlan, 29, pulled directly into the path of a semitrailer about 12:30 a.m. Thursday just east of Wanatah, according to LaPorte County police.
After his car came to rest in the median of the highway, McLauchlan fled to a nearby wooded area where police reportedly found him hiding behind a tree.
He was charged with operating while intoxicated after refusing a breathalyzer test and telling officers he was heading home from a local bar, police said.
Police said McLauchlan and the truck driver from Chicago were not injured.
