A Portage man was killed and another person seriously injured in a head-on collision Thursday morning, which closed a stretch of highway between LaPorte and Michigan City.
Joseph Schreiber, 47, of 961 Camelot, Portage, was transported to Franciscan St. Anthony Health in Michigan City where he was pronounced dead, according to LaPorte County Police. The other driver, Justin Fitch, 22, of rural LaPorte was airlifted from the scene to Memorial Hospital in South Bend with undisclosed injuries.
According to LaPorte County Police, the accident occurred just after 5:30 a.m. on U.S. 35 north of U.S. 20.
Fitch was northbound when, for unknown reasons, he crossed the center line in a 2010 Chrysler striking the oncoming 2000 Saturn driven by Schreiber.
The condition of Fitch was not known but he was alert and talking to officers at the crash site, LaPorte County Police Capt. Heath Haferkamp said.
The highway was closed for a several mile stretch from U.S. 20 to Johnson Road to allow for an investigation of the crash and clean up of the wreckage, Haferkamp said. The highway reopened around 8 a.m.
Haferkamp said the results of a blood test on both drivers are still pending but alcohol is not suspected as a factor in the crash. There were no other passengers in either of the cars. He said where both drivers were heading was not known. Seat belts were used by both drivers and air bags in both vehicle deployed, he said. There were no witnesses to the crash.
