Winter driving at its worst.

Doug Ross, The Times

Heavy lake effect snow is causing dangerous conditions on roads throughout LaPorte County and the threat is expected to continue as winds pick up tonight, according to police.

"We are asking for people to stay off of the roads and advising against travel," LaPorte County police Captain Michael Kellems said.

Police say as much as nine inches of snow has fallen, with the area north of LaPorte to the Michigan state line the hardest hit.

Central LaPorte County has also had heavy snow fall, police said.

Police have responded to numerous slide-offs and minor crashes.

Strong winds predicted for tonight are expected to make drifting a major concern, particularly on north-south roads, police said.
