PORTAGE | A 41-year-old LaPorte man could wind up in prison for as long as three years on allegations he stole a toy.

James Hicks, formerly of Knox, made his initial appearance Wednesday in LaPorte Circuit Court on Class D felony theft. According to court documents, Hicks, in August, was at a friend's house in the 500 block of Virginia Avenue, LaPorte.

He put on a Darth Vader electronic collector's edition helmet and was told to take it off by the owner. Suddenly, police said, Hicks ran out of the residence with the helmet depicted in the popular movie "Star Wars."

The helmet has an estimated value of $80, and information developed in the investigation indicated Hicks might have sold the helmet to get money for drugs, police said.
