WESTVILLE | A Merrillville woman, who worked as a guard at Westville Correctional Facility, was arrested Friday and charged with one count of trafficking with an inmate.

According to a statement issued by the facility administration, Joyce Sokolowski, 54, was questioned by correctional officers from facility's Internal Affairs Department after she reported for work. A search found she had tobacco and other contraband intended for an inmate.

"It is regrettable that another staff member decided to traffic with an offender," Westville Superintendent Mark Levenhagen said. "At the same time, I am proud of all our employees who continue to work hard to uncover such activity and stop it."

The incident is still under investigation by internal affairs to determine what charges or internal disciplinary action might be taken with any other offenders allegedly involved.
