WESTVILLE | A 51-year-old Westville correctional officer was arrested on official misconduct and trafficking charges after alleging trafficking to prisoners, officials said.

Mary Martin of Michigan City reported for her shift at 5:30 a.m. Monday. Officers searched her personal property, which is required of everyone entering the prison, and conducted a subsequent search of her vehicle.

After questioning, Martin was arrested and transported to the LaPorte County Jail.

Indiana Department of Correction officials did not release the nature of the item allegedly trafficked but said it was not an illegal substance.

Martin was hired at the prison in December 2007.
