The folks at LARC want to thank everyone who came out to the annual fish fry fundraiser and those who volunteered to make it a success. Due to all the support, 110 more dinners were served than last year and total profit was more than $7,700. LARC is an organization that provides services to adults with developmental disabilities.

Also, if you haven't yet sent Christmas cards out to family and friends, you can purchase cards that were created by some of their artistic clients. The cards sell for $10 per dozen and they still have a few of the 2007 versions available as well as a new set for this year. For more information, call (708) 474-1540.

National Guard Unit gets donations

I was recently in contact with Kelli Staley of the Lansing Public Library. Her son is currently deployed to Afghanistan with the Illinois National Guard and she told me about a neat project that was done to help the 634th Brigade Support Battalion.

Her son let them know he wanted a Nomex hood like ones worn by firefighters to protect his face and neck. His father, Russ, contacted some agencies in the area and ended up with enough donations for the entire unit. They should arrive before Christmas. Thanks go to the following for their donations: Gary Bell Sr., the fire departments of Sauk Village, Richton Park, Romeoville, Flossmoor, Park Forest, Joliet and Lynwood, Walt's Foods Center, Thornton Lions Club, Park Forest American Legion Post 1198, Matteson Sons Of American Legion Post 474, Lansing Fraternal Order of Police Local 218, Sauk Village Firefighters Association, Bolingbrook American Legion Auxiliary Post 1288, Elks Club of Dolton/Lynwood Post 2335, Illinois Friends of The Military and Steger Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8283.

Beware of the Santa slasher

No, I'm not talking about a low-budget holiday horror flick. I just wanted to warn residents to keep a close eye on their inflatables. It seems that a slasher is dampening the holiday spirit of some home decorators. Last week as I was driving my oldest son and his friend home, they mentioned that they'd heard about kids going out and cutting holes in inflatable Santas, snowmen and other decorations. As we were driving home, I saw a few that looked like they were short on air. Then after I got home I noticed that our Rudolph looked particularly sluggish and that Santa and Frosty were leaning a bit. I initially thought it was the snow weighing down the inflatables, but my husband found a large rip in Rudolph's side and Santa now needs a thorough inspection.

I hope the slasher or slashers (I'll be it's not a lone culprit) don't forget that Santa is watching and pulling out some coal with their names on it.

Did the Lake County Solid Waste Management District board wait too long before setting a 60-day deadline for developer Earl Powers to show he can deliver on the trash-to-ethanol plant?
