MERRILLVILLE | People may visit Mega Thrift at 6490 Broadway to look for bargains, but manager Jonathan Smith said the business offers more than just a place to shop.
The store, owned by the nonprofit City Outreach Foundation, also serves as an employer for physically and mentally disabled people and for those recovering from drug and alcohol addictions.
Jonathan Smith said employees get an opportunity to interact with customers and feel proud about the work they complete at the store. Many are people who couldn't find jobs elsewhere.
Michael Smith, 21, of Hammond, who is trying to kick a drug and alcohol addiction, has worked at the thrift store for about two months.
"It helps me out," Michael Smith said.
He said he attends the Reformers Unanimous addiction program in Hammond and has been sober for about five months.
Sorting the donated merchandise, cleaning furniture and assisting customers are among Michael Smith's responsibilities.
Other employees call him "Muscles" because of his ability to move larger items, said Jonathan Smith, who is not related to Michael Smith.
Jonathan Smith said some of the funds the store receives help teens attend Christian schools. He said the store also offers free bread to those in need.
