MOROCCO | Firefighters spent more than 10 hours battling a blaze at Morocco Finer Foods grocery store this weekend, the fire chief said.
The fire started around 8:30 p.m. Saturday and continued into Sunday at the business located in the 500 block of South Polk Street, Fire Chief Corrie Myers said in a news release. Nearby homes were evacuated because of heavy smoke pouring from the building and blowing to the east. Residents later returned on their own.
Firefighters remained at the scene Sunday to make sure the fire did not restart.
Seven agencies responded to the blaze: Morocco Volunteer Fire Department, Brook Volunteer Fire Department, Lake Township Fire Department, Kentland Fire Department, Rensselaer Fire Department, Newton County Ambulance Service and Papineau Fire Department. The Morocco Volunteer Fire Department’s auxiliary prepared food, hot beverages and warm shelter for the emergency responders.
The cause of the fire still is under investigation by the Indiana state fire marshal's office and the Morocco Volunteer Fire Department.
