LAKE VILLAGE | A South Bend man was killed after his vehicle slammed into the back of a disabled semitrailer Tuesday, authorities said.

Eugene B. Williams died after being extricated from his vehicle near the intersection of U.S. 41 and County Road 600 North just south of the town of Lake Village, according to a Newton County Sheriff's Office release.

Williams, 55, was driving another semitrailer and crashed into the stalled truck that was parked in part of the right lane on U.S. 41, police said.

The driver of the disabled semitrailer, Joseph Gregory, of Harvey, had set emergency triangles out in the road, police said.

A 42-year-old woman, who was riding with Williams, was transported to Franciscan St. Anthony Health in Crown Point with facial injuries and a possible back injury after being extricated from the sleeping area of the truck, the release states.

The roads were closed for about six hours as police investigated the scene.
