KENTLAND | The Newton County Sheriff's Department and Indiana State Police are investigating a fatal crash Friday morning north of Kentland.

A driver was heading north on U.S. 41 about 11 a.m. when the car began drifting off the road, police said. It's uncertain what caused the vehicle to leave the road.

The driver lost control of the vehicle while attempting to return to the road. The vehicle crossed the median before it was struck by a semitrailer traveling south on U.S. 41 near County Road 1500 South.

Police said the driver of the passenger vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The semi driver, Jeremey Smith, 36, of Alvin, Ill., wasn't injured.

The name of the deceased driver is being withheld by police pending notification of the victim's family and further investigation.
