KENTLAND | A 66-year-old man is being held without bond at the Newton County Jail on attempted murder and resisting law enforcement charges after allegedly stabbing an 8-year-old boy multiple times in a Kentland home, police said.

According to a news release issued by the Kentland Police Department, at 3:52 p.m. Tuesday, police officers, fire officials and paramedics responded to a home in the 200 block of North Sixth Street for a call of a boy who had been stabbed multiple times.

When officers arrived, they confronted 66-year-old Thomas Esmond, who allegedly told police to shoot him. Authorities said Esmond got into a physical struggle with police and was subdued with a Taser.

The boy was transported to Iroquois Memorial Hospital in Watseka, Ill., in stable condition.

Esmond was transported to Jasper County Hospital in Rensselaer, where he was treated and released to Kentland police.

Officials with the Newton County Jail said Esmond did not provide a home address upon booking.
