PORTAGE, IN - Amelia F. Fernandez, 89, of Portage, IN, passed away Friday, November 3, 2017 at the Miller Merry Manor in Portage, IN. She was born on January 9, 1928 in East Chicago, IN.

Amelia leaves to cherish her memories her daughters, Andre (Rene) Gonzalez of Portage, IN and Annette Baseley of Greenwood, IN; five grandchildren: Nick and Jessica Gonzalez, Michael and Matthew Baseley, and Nicole Ford; two first cousins: Virginia Alvarado and Margaret (Mark) Gallagher; second cousins: Robert (Keri) Blazkiewicz and Laura (Todd) Tschetter; third cousins: Maxwell Blazkiewicz, Abigail and Morgan Tschetter; god-daughter, Connie Gonzalez of Crown Point, IN. Preceded in death by her parents, Antonio (Tony the Barber) and Mercedes (Vega) Flores and cousin, Raymond Alvarado. Amelia was a former member of Holy Trinity Church, Gary, IN and St. Stephen Martyr Parish, Merrillville, IN. She was involved in the Women's Club at St. Stephen and shared her time, talent and treasure with her family, friends and church. Amelia loved to needlepoint crochet, knit and was a skilled seamstress. She also enjoyed scrap booking and baking. Her specialty was her delicious cookies. Amelia loved to swim and vacation with her family. She enjoyed Bingo and Casino bus trips with her friend, Essie Collins. Amelia was nominated for the 2005 Survivors Calendar by her friend, Betty Higgins. Amelia, Meli and Millie (her nicknames) was a graduate of Froebel High School Class of 1945 and received an Associate's Degree from Gary Business College. Amelia was employed at Inland Steel for 17 years until her retirement working in the 14' Mill as a checker.

Visitation will be at Nativity of Our Savior Parish, 2949 Willowcreek Rd., Portage, IN on Thursday, November 9, 2017 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. with the Funeral Service to be on Friday, November 10, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at the church with Father Kime officiating. Amelia's family would like to thank the staff of the Miller Merry Manor in Portage, IN and VNA Hospice for their kindness, love and compassion her Amelia.
