Sophie Adams

Sophie Adams, age 87, of Crown Point, formerly of Merrillville, passed away on Friday, July 11, 2003. Survivors are three children, Gladys (John) Schwerman of Denver, Colorado, Tom (Hilma) Adams of Crown Point and Sharon (Gerald) Sasser of Hebron; nine grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grand-daughter; and one sister, Dorothy (Mario) Dodaro of Lansing, IL. Preceded in death by husband, Michael and grandson, Larry Brummet.

Friends may call at the Pruzin & Little Funeral Service, 811 E. Franciscan Dr., (on State Road 55 south of State road 231), Crown Point, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, July 15, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. DIRECTLY at St. Anthony Home Chapel, 203 Franciscan Dr., Crown Point. Rev. Myron Lowisz officiating. Visitation on Tuesday morning from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass. Burial, Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville, Indiana.

Mrs. Adams was a former member of St. Andrew Church, Merrillville, and Blessed Sacrament Church.

Ronald Anderson

Colorado / Hammond

Ronald Anderson, age 62, of Colorado Springs, CO, formerly of Hammond, IN, passed away Tuesday, July 8, 2003. He is survived by his wife Beth; children: Jeff (Laronda) Anderson of Colorado Springs, daughter, Rebecca Anderson of Los Angeles, CA and step-daughter, Laura Voss of Colorado Springs, CO; grandchildren; Dawn Burns, Justin, Brianna, Crystal and Stephanie Anderson, all of Colorado Springs and Toketia and Abraham Andersons of Los Angeles, CA; his mother, Katherine (Harry) Downs of Schererville, IN; brothers and sisters: Katheen (Stan) Bafia of Lowell, IN, Richard (Pat) Anderson of Denver CO, Jean (Robert) Fulayter of Schererville, IN and Mark Anderson (Joy) of Saugatuck, MI; aunts, uncles and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his father, Earl A. Anderson.

Mr. Anderson was a graduate of Morton High School in Hammond and served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He attended the Naval Academy and was a graduate of Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN. He was an Aeronautical Consultant Engineer.

Cremation followed. A celebration of his life was held on Saturday, July 12, 2003 in Colorado Springs, CO.

Paul E. Cassoday Sr.


Paul E. Cassoday, Sr., age 77, of Hammond, Indiana passed away on Wednesday, July 9, 2003. He is survived by his children: Paul E. Cassoday Jr. of Hammond and Duane (Linda) Cassoday of Highland; two brothers, Donald (Kaye) Cassoday of Griffith and Jimmy (Betty) Cassoday of Lansing, IL; two sisters, Marge (Phil) Roehrich of Florida and Mary Fowler of Jeffersonville, IN; several nieces and nephews. Paul was preceded in death by his parents Forest L. and Meme Cassoday, two brothers, Winfield Scott Cassoday and Robert Cassoday and three sisters, Margaret Cassoday, Wander Underwood and Irene Kowowitz.

Paul loved music, especially playing the guitar with his son, Paul Jr.

Anastasia Christian, age 85, of Hobart, IN, passed away on Thursday July 10 2003. She is survived by her son, Chris Christian of Hobart; granddaughter, Anastasia of Wheatfield; brother, Frank Kostouros of St. John; sister, Vasilike Triantis of Seattle, WA; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Frank in 1966.

Hal E. Clark, age 89, late of St. John, IN passed away on Thursday, July 10 2003 at his home. Mr. Clark was born July 30, 1913 in Tab, IN. He is the beloved husband of Fanella (nee Leaver) for 66 years. Loving father of Neal Clark, Bryce Clark and Nelda Elder. Devoted grandfather of Kevin (Tracey) Clark, Darin Clark, Kimberly (Brian) King, John Clark, Tom Elder II, Keith (Kylie) Elder and Craig (Kristy) Elder. Great-grandfather of nine. Dear son of the late Milton and late Docia (nee Gray) Clark. Preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers. Fond uncle of many nieces and nephews.

Retired employee of Inland Steel with 33 years of service. Member of Inland's 25 Year Retiree's Club. Member of A.F.A.M. Lake Lodge #157 in Crown Point, IN (service Sunday evening 7:00 PM), AARP and Orak Shriners. Former member of Eastern Star Lake Lodge #408.

Phyllis McCoy Davis

Milwaukee, WI/Hammond

Phyllis McCoy Davis, formerly of Hammond, IN, died peacefully in her sleep in Milwaukee on July 1st, 2003 at the age of 85. She taught chemistry and physical science at Hammond Tech in the 1960's and 70's and also did "home-bound" teaching. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard L. Davis, who worked for Maoco at the Whiting Refinery. She is survived by her daughters, Margaret "Peggy" Eichenberger of Milwaukee WI and Prudence "Prudy" (aka Sr. Zoe, osb) Davis of Turvey, England; her son-in-law Kirk Eichenberger; and her grandchildren Gretchen, Theron and Sarah Eichenberger. The funeral was held at Christ Episcopal Church, Whitefish Bay, WI, on July 5th, 2003.

Lorraine B. Nightingale-DeGrazia, born October 31, 1926 in Ironwood, MI to Arthur J. Basso, Sr. and Mary (Mukavitz) Basso, died Thursday, July 10, 2003 at the Horton VNA Hospice Center in Valparaiso, IN. The Nightingale family moved to Valparaiso in 1946. Lorraine was graduated from Oak Park River Forest High School, Oak Park, IL, in 1944. She married George Charles Nightingale November 4, 1944 who predeceased her in 1991. She married Eugene Joseph DeGrazia April 13, 1996 who predeceased her in 1996. She lived in Valparaiso most of her life and retired to Naples, FL in 1995 where she resided during the extended winter months.

She leaves behind two sons, Charles Nightingale of Valparaiso, IN and Craig Nightingale of Imperial, CA; four daughters, Georgene Nightingale of Chicago, IL, Marla Corona of Schererville, IN, Artis Selby of Ft. Smith, AR and Lora Foster of Kernersville, NC; two step daughters, Antoinette (Dr. John) Harding of South Bend, IN and Dr. Diane DeGrazia of Cleveland OH; one step-son, Jerry (Sandra) DeGrazia of Tucson, AZ; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren and nine step-great grandchildren; one sister, Rosemary Hall of Tucson, AZ and one step-sister, Lenore Caffarello of Houston, TX. She was predeceased by one son, Lance Michael Nightingale, parents, one brother, Arthur J. Basso, Jr., one step-son Eugene DeGrazia and one step-brother-in-law, Michael.

For 25 years she served as corporate secretary at McDaniel Fire Protection of Valparaiso. She joined St. Paul Catholic Church in 1947 and actively served the parish: 25-year member of Home and School, 20-year choir member, 10-year Parish Council member and three-term president of the Altar and Rosary Society. She also participated in Youth Ministry, Confirmation Class, RCIA program and the Clothing Center. She was very involved at the Banta Senior Activity Center and served on the board of the Aliveness Project of Northwest Indiana, Inc. An avid line dancer, bowler, bridge player and golfer, she was a member of the Valparaiso Country Club. In Naples, FL, she was an active member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church since 1996. She was also a member of the Imperial Golf Estates Country Club, the Palm River Golf Club and the Doers Association in Naples.

Visitation is Sunday, July 13, 2003 from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Dykes Funeral Home, 2305 N. Campbell, Valparaiso, IN; the wake service with scriptures will be conducted at 3:00 PM by Rev. Joseph Pawlowski and the rosary will be said at 4:00 PM with the members of St. Paul's Altar and Rosary Group. On Monday, July 14, 2003 at 10:30 AM from Dykes Funeral Home to St. Paul's Catholic Church, 1855 Harrison Avenue, Valparaiso, where Rev. Joseph Pawlowski and Msgr. John Charlebois will celebrate the 11:00 AM Funeral Mass. Burial is in the St. Paul Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted for the St. Paul Church School Building Fund, The American Cancer Society and the Horton VNA Hospice Center in Valparaiso, IN.

Thomas E. Dering

Ogden Dunes/Gary

Thomas E. Dering, age 66, a resident of Ogden Dunes for 36 years, formerly of Gary, IN, passed away Thursday, July 10, 2003 at Methodist Hospital Southlake Campus after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born June 20, 1937 in Gary, IN the son of Robert M. and Sallie Dering. On November 25, 1961, he married Nancy J. (nee Rodgers), his devoted wife of 42 years. Also surviving is one brother Richard R. (Marriellen) Dering of Merrillville, nephew Brian (Kathie) Dering of Merrillville, Aunt Margaret Clark of Oregon, cousins Dave (Deanie) Clark and Aleta Clark of Oregon and Mardilee (Steve) Kalember of Crown Point. mother-in-law Mary Evelyn Rodgers of Valparaiso. He was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Sally and father-in-law, Joseph W. Rodgers.

Tom was the former owner of Gary Office Equipment Company and later retired from Homewood Industries in Homewood, IL. Tom served in the U.S. Army Reserves. He was a graduate of Horace Mann High School, class of 1955, a graduate of Indiana University, class of 1959, a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. He was a member of the Gary Jaycees, a former Member of the University Club, the National Rifle Association, the Independent Cat Society and a member of the Ogden Dunes Presbyterian Church. Tom was an accomplished outdoorsman, fisherman, skier and wood carver. His positive attitude will always be remembered by his family and many wonderful friends.

Funeral Services Monday, July 14, 2003, at 7:00 PM at the Burns Funeral Home (corner 101st and Broadway) Merrillville/Crown Point Chapel, with Rev. Lawrence Heeg officiating. Services will terminate at the funeral home. Friends may visit with the family at the Burns Funeral Home on Monday from 3:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. (time of services). Lottie A. Dudzik (nee Wicenciak), age 82, of Whiting, passed away on Thursday, July 10, 2003 at the Hammond-Whiting Care Center. She was the beloved daughter of the late George and Sophie (Jerzyk) Wicenciak. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Isabell (late Albert) Wisotsky and Evelyn (late William) Visak. She is survived by special nieces and nephews: Joette (James) Banaszak, Mark (Karen) Wisotsky, Bernadine (Gilbert) Cusson, Bruce (late Kathy) Visak, Wendy (Ron) Edwards and Kurt Visak. Many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and nephews and great-grand nieces and nephews.

Lottie Dudzik was born on August 26, 1920 in Whiting, Indiana, and was a lifelong resident. Richard "Dick" Ewen Hall


Richard "Dick" Ewen Hall, age 68, of Leesburg, IN, passed away at 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 10, 2003 at his residence. He was born March 2, 1935 in Michigan City, IN to Phil and Gladys (Wein) Hall. Married Beverly J. Dutz on August 11, 1956, she survives. Also survived by two sons: Darrell R. (Sharon) Hall of Highland, IN and Darren E. Hall of Leesburg. A daughter: Denise L. (Roxanne) Hall of Leesburg; Two grandchildren also survive, Andrew and Samantha at home in Highland. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.

Mr. Hall lived in Highland, Indiana and Leesburg, moving permanently to Leesburg in 1994. He was a painter and decorator. He owned R.E. Hall & Sons Painting and was a Union Painter for 46 years. A member of the N. Webster American Legion. He was a U.S. Army Veteran. He was an avid fisherman and gardener. Mildred "Mimi" T. (Sotak) Jefchak, age 68, of Bay St. Louis, MS. died July 6, 2003 in Bay St. Louis. She was a native of Hammond, IN, and a long time resident of Bay St. Louis, MS. She was of the Catholic Faith and a member of Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church, Bay St. Louis, MS. She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Jefchak and father, John J. Sotak. She is survived by two daughters, Nanette Boyer and husband Mark of Whiting, IN, Janice-Jefchak Farmer of Tucson, AZ, mother, Susan "Sue" Sotak and brother, John "Jack" Sotak and wife, Fran, all of Bay St. Louis, MS; two grandchildren, Emily Farmer and Nathan Farmer, both of Tucson, AZ; one niece and two nephews of Bay St. Louis, MS. Sigrid H. Metzinger, age 72, of Portage, passed away on July 11, 2003. She was a Portage resident for the past six years and formerly lived in Hammond and Chicago. She loved nature and people, and enjoyed gardening, birdwatching and growing flowers.

Survivors are her husband, Ladislaus; daughter, Renate (Ronald) Sholar of Portage; grandchildren, Ashley, Christopher and Brian Sholar, all of Portage; sister, Waltraud Schenkber of Frankfurt, Germany; mother-in-law, Katherine Metzinger of Portage; and numerous other family members.

Former Chesterton resident Irvin D. Mitchell died Saturday, July 5, 2003 in Whitefish, MT. He was born May 4, 1916 in Chicago, IL, the son of John and Florence (Cemiar) Mitchell who preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife, Clair of Mesa, AZ; six sons: Ron (Robin) in Sebring, FL, Fred (Pattie) in Chesterton, David in Sebring, FL, Richard in Valparaiso, Larry in Panagould, AR and Pat (Marilyn) in Salem, IN; stepson John Pearson (Cheryl) in Bertram, TX; two step-daughters, Ann Donahue (Bob) in Whitefish, MT and Dottie Johnson (Ron) in Valparaiso; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Harry.

Irv graduated from Chesterton High School in 1935, he worked as a steel painter for American Bridge Corp. in Gary, as a self employed paint contractor, and a salesman for Sears in Michigan City from where he retired in 1981. He was active in youth sports in Chesterton and was one of the founders of the State Park Little League and the Porter Babe Ruth League. You could always find "Mitch" at a football, baseball or basketball game, in which one of his boys was playing. No services will be held.

Carl J. Nichols, age 91, of Highland, IN, passed away on Friday, July 11, 2003. He is survived by his daughter, Janice (Walter Esther) Williams of Schererville; two grandchildren: Jamie (Eric) Wolverton and Daniel Williams, both of Florida; two great-grandchildren: Ryley and Owyn Wolverton; two sisters-in-law, Shirley Hoogewerf of Schererville and Ann Hoogewerf of Lansing, IL; and brother-in-law, Jack (Letha) Hoogewerf of Griffith; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Grace Nichols, Jan. 6, 2003.

Frank P. (Ippolito) Polito


Frank P. (Ippolito) Polito, age 90, passed away on Friday, July 11, 2003. He had been a Portage resident for 50 years. Frank was born on October 7, 1912 in Kentwood, Louisiana to Nick and Carmela Ippolito. He married Ann Penn who preceded him in death in 1994. He retired from Boilermakers Local and was a member of the Moose Lodge.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, brothers Tony and Joe and sisters, Betty Welsh, Angeline Fesi and Katherine Tuminello. Frank is survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews; and his special care givers.

Geraldine M. Quinn, age 89, of Cedar Lake, passed away on Wednesday, July 9 2003 at her home. She is survived by her step son: Eugene G. Quinn Jr. of Florida; cousin: Stephen (Virginia) Abel of Hinsdale, IL; close friends: Raymond Ferry of Cedar Lake and David Brandenburg of Cedar Lake; and many loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Eugene Quinn.

Arnold F. Robinson


Arnold F. Robinson, age 94, of Hammond, passed away on Thursday July 10, 2003. He is survived by his wife, Jean Ree; daughter Anne (Bill) Avery of Golden CO; son, John (Diana) Robinson; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Arnold was a retired Band Director and Teacher at the Hammond Tech High School with over thirty-five years of teaching. He received his Bachelor of Arts from DePauw in Greencastle, IN and his Masters degree from North Western University in Illinois. Private services will be held by the family. R. Dale Robley, age 43, of Highland, passed away Wednesday, July 9, 2003 as a result of a tragic accident. He is survived by his mother, Marva G. Lavery of Portage; life partner of 21 years, Gregg Jen of Highland; two sisters, Donna (Ronald) Vaughn of Portage and Mara (Ray) Trudeau of Bay St. Louis, MS; one niece, Kristen (Donald) O'Conner of Valparaiso; three nephews, Gregory Dagenais of Biloxi, MS, Christopher (Glenda) Dagenais of Henderson, NV and Eric (Rebecca) Vaughn of Porter, IN; five great nieces, Maryah Dagenais, Mackenzie, Delaney and Hannah O'Conner, Josephine Vaughn; and several Aunts, Uncles and Cousins. Preceded in death by father, Roland A. Robley.

Sandra Ellen Ronchi (nee Irwin), age 61, of Portage, Indiana, passed away on Thursday, July 3, 2003. Sandra is survived by her mother, Ina Irwin of Canada; her loving husband, William Ronchi of 23 years; two sons, Daniel and David Ehrmantraut and two daughters, Susan (Ron) Luthi and Laurie (Terry) Ryan, all from Canada; two step-children: James Ronchi and Pamela (Bill) Dagenas of Indiana; two brothers, Henry (Deanna) and Lawrence (Edna) Irwin and two sisters, Merle (Gordon) Youck, all of Canada and Arlene (Jimmie Dye) Zimmerman of Indiana; grandchildren, Sarina and Steven Ehrmantraut, Ashley Burton, Lindsay and Chelsea Luthi, all of Canada, Tony Liebold and Gina and Jenny Ronchi of Indiana. Many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

A service for the immediate family was held at the Kraft Funeral Home in Hobart, Indiana. Sandra will be deeply missed by all her family and friends. May she rest in eternal peace.

Felix A. Ruke

Felix A. Ruke, age 79, of Ft. Myers, FL, formerly of Harvey and Tinley Park, IL, passed away on Tuesday, July 8, 2003 in Ft. Myers, FL. He was born in Clinton, Indiana to the late Dominic and Rose Patrick Ruke. He is survived by three children: Leslie (Michael) Hawkins of Castroville, TX, David (Tamara) Ruke of Lake Village, IN and Craig Ruke of Ft. Myers Beach, FL; and two grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his wife Carolyn Ruke in 1975.

Funeral services will be held Monday, July 14, 2003 at 11:00 AM from the White-Love Funeral Home, 525 S. 2nd St., Chesterton, IN, with Pastor Ron Larson officiating. The family will receive friends Monday from 9:00 AM until time of service at 11:00 AM. Burial, Chesterton Cemetery, Chesterton, IN. Mr. Ruke was an Electrician employed in the Building Trade. A member of Local #134 I.B.E.N and a U.S. Navy Veteran of WWII.

John B. Sabin

John B. Sabin, age 81, of Morocco, Indiana, formerly of Chicago, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, July 9, 2003. John was a veteran of the U.S. Army, World War II.

He was preceded in death by his granddaughter Lisa Renee in December 2002. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Ignacia Sabin of Morocco and children Isabel Robles of Chicago, Louie (Paula) Ramirez of Illinois, Beatrice Salas of Chicago, Mary (Jesse) Magana of Nevada, Theresa (Rick) Pohn of Illinois and Jackie (Danny) Sigers of Illinois; 18 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Ann Lugo of Chicago and brother-in-law Tomas (Dolly) Lugo of South Carolina; and many loving nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Monday, July 14, 2003 at 2:00 P.M. at St. Augusta Catholic Church, 3228 W. State Road 10, Lake Village, Indiana. Rev. John J. Cummings officiating. Burns Funeral Home, Crown Point, Indiana, in charge of arrangements.

Margaret C. Soto (nee Castillo), age 70, of Griffith, Indiana, passed away on Friday, July 11, 2003. She is survived by her husband Eutiquio, of 52 years. Five children: Sylvia (Scott) St. Clair of Griffith, Eutiquio, Jr. (Sylvia) Soto of Chesterton, Manuel Soto of Griffith, Lee (Brenda Zandstra) Soto of Griffith, and Sonia (Michael) Hoffman of Las Vegas, NV; six grandchildren: Faith, Rhianna, Casey, Julia, Karly and Ian; brother and sisters: Eligio (Socorro) Castillo of Texas, sister and best friend Maria (Dario) Ruiz of Hammond, Olivia Basaldua of Texas, Darita (Albert) Williams of New Mexico and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Diana and grandson, Dario.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, July 14, 2003 at 9:30 a.m. from the Kuiper Funeral Home Chapel with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary Church, Griffith, with Rev. Theodore J. Mens officiating. Burial, Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, Schererville, IN. Friends are invited to meet with the family on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Kuiper Funeral Home, 9039 Kleinman Road (two blocks south of Ridge Road), Highland, IN.

Mrs. Soto was a member of St. Mary Church of Griffith. She was retired from Our Lady of Mercy Hospital in Dyer with 18 years of service. Father Mens will recite the rosary at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday. She will be missed by her family and all of those who knew and loved her.

Mary D. Williams, born May 21, 1914 in Altoona, PA, formerly of Griffith, IN, died July 9, 2003. She was a member of Griffith Chapter of Eastern Star #583 and a member of Grace Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Laurence E. Williams and brother, John C. McKinney. Survived by her son: Dean (Carol) Williams of Monticello, IN; daughter: Janet Williams of Birmingham, AL; three grandchildren: Mary (Erie) Kestle, Margy (Jim) Boyer and Larry (Tonja) Williams; seven great-grandchildren: Julie, Jonathan and Adam Kestle, Felicia and Audry Pegues, Cindy and Clay Williams; brothers: Wayne McKinney of San Jose, CA, George (Maxines) McKinney of Kansas City, MO; numerous nieces and nephews; special friend, Sammie.

A service was held on Friday in Trussville, AL. Friends are invited to meet with the family on Monday, July 14, 2003 at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home from 10:00 AM until the time of service at 1:00 PM.
