Lyn Hein was always willing to help people, and especially enjoyed helping the students at school, said her husband, Joe Hein Sr.
In addition to working as a secretary, she also would help out on the playground or in the lunchroom, and used to tutor as well, he said.
“She was always willing to help them out,” he said.
Lyn Hein, 72, of Crown Point and formerly of Gary, died Sept. 6. She was a 1958 graduate of Horace Mann High School. She worked 35 years for the Merrillville School Corp.
The couple, who had been married 50 years, initially met in downtown Gary. He worked at a service station and she brought her car to be worked on. They were married several years later.
“We were two people, always working together,” he said.
She was a cancer survivor, and enjoyed doing work for cancer organizations, her husband said.
In past years when her health was better, the couple enjoyed traveling. They went on a cruise to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary, and then went on another cruise to the Virgin Islands several years later with friends, Joe Hein said.
Although her health prevented her from golfing, she enjoyed watching golf on television and often went to the library to research her favorite golfers.
“She could tell you what place they were in, how many points they had, and how much money they had made,” he said.
Hein said people admired his wife’s kind, generous nature.
“She was always outgoing, and she always loved being with family,” he said.
