Burma Metros-Landers was a kind and generous woman who got along well with everyone, her family members said.
“She had more friends than you could imagine,” said her daughter-in-law, Patsy Metros. “She kept in contact with everyone. She absolutely loved little kids, and family was her utmost concern.”
Burma Metros-Landers, 92, of Crown Point, died Aug. 19.
She was preceded in death by her husbands. Glen Metros, her husband of 31 years, died in 1969, and Raymond Landers, her husband of 24 years, died in 1996.
She was raised Baptist, and had been a member of several Baptist congregations over the years, both in Northwest Indiana and in her native Missouri.
Her son, Larry Metros, said he once took his mother out to a fancy dinner for Mother’s Day.
“She didn’t enjoy it, because material things meant nothing to her,” he said. “She told me I should’ve taken her to Burger King.”
She had owned her own restaurant in Missouri, and she loved southern cooking, he said.
“She loved to cook and loved to bake, and she always had something sweet in the house for us,” he said.
In addition to cakes, pies and cobblers, she also made southern favorites like ham and beans with cornbread and fried chicken.
Patsy Metros said her mother-in-law thrived on family gatherings.
“She loved being with the family at the holidays, coming to our house for dinner, and going to family parties,” she said. “Those things were the highlight of her year.”
Larry Metros agreed.
“Her life was about family, no two-ways about it,” he said. “She had a good, long life. She was an excellent mom, grandmother and wife. She never quit caring about her family.”
