Joe Jones loved spending time with his family and loved tending his garden, said his son, Keith Jones.

“He lived in Cedar Lake for more than 30 years, and he loved it here,” he said. “He loved his garden, and was a laid-back, happy person.”

Joe Jones, 78, of Cedar Lake, died Dec. 19. He worked 35 years for Thrall Car, Chicago Heights.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Jones.

Joe Jones had an extensive garden in his yard, that included perennials and several kinds of Japanese maples.

He spent most of his free time out in the yard.

He had eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, and loved playing with the little ones.

He valued family above all else, and made sure he helped them out financially whenever he could, his son said.

Over the years, he had several health problems, including cancer, heart surgery and a stroke. Those problems were complicated by his diabetes, but he always tried to eat right and take care of himself, his son said.

Jones was the rock of the family, someone everyone always turned to.

“He took care of so many people,” Keith Jones said. “Anything you needed help with, he did. He was always someone you could go to and talk to. It’s a huge loss for our family.”
