Shirley Mudy supported her daughters by supporting what they liked to do. Her dedication helped lead to the formation of Cedar Lake Girls Softball.
Mudy was a founding member and integral part of that organization, said her daughters, AnnMarie Usdowski and Mary Whittemore.
“We were moving out here (to Cedar Lake), we were starting softball and we needed a coach,” Whittemore said. “She wanted to give girls in the community a chance to play softball.”
Mudy played different roles in the organization, including that of coach.
“She taught us to always be a good sport and do your best," Whittemore said.
Mudy was also a coach for Catholic Youth Organization volleyball along with husband Stanley.
Mudy was a wife, daughter, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother, her daughters said. A graduate of Hammond Tech High School, she worked at NISEC and Cardinal Health.
“She had a special place in her heart for special needs kids” that she worked with, Whittemore said.
Mudy was an active member of Holy Name Catholic Church in Cedar Lake. She served on “quite a few committees” and was a Eucharistic minister. She also enjoyed working in the soup kitchen.
Mudy “always did for others,” her daughters said. “She was a good cook; she liked baking. She made Christmas cookies, tons and tons of Christmas cookies.”
Mudy also loved to bowl, crochet, work in her garden and spend time with family, they said.
Per the family’s request, memorials to Mudy may be made to Cedar Lake Girls Softball or Holy Name Church.
