Gene Charbonneau was a wonderful man who had a deep sense of integrity, said his wife, Mary Charbonneau.
“Everyone loved his sense of humor,” she said. “He was proud of the fact he had done two tours as a Marine and was a successful insurance broker.”
Eugene “Gene” Charbonneau, 85, of Crown Point, died Feb. 1.
He was an avid golfer, and was proud of the hole in one he got at age 69, his wife said.
He loved going to the YMCA to exercise, and loved his Thursday meetings at Bronko’s with his friends.
“He had a sense of honor, and believed in taking care of people,” she said. “Every year, he made sure to collect money from his Bronko’s buddies so they could give their waitress a monetary gift.”
The couple was married 60 years, and met at a Serbian picnic in Merrillville.
He loved his family, and every year for 43 years the family spent time together at a cottage. The last 10 years were spent at a cottage in Culver, she said.
“He loved children, he loved playing with the kids,” she said. “He had a kindness and humor people enjoyed.”
The couple did a lot of traveling together, and Mary Charbonneau said she enjoyed going to conventions with her husband.
“Even with five children, he made sure we had time together as a couple,” she said.
Mary Charbonneau said her husband enjoyed being a mentor to young professionals, and he prided himself in taking good care of his clients.
“Every year, he remembered to send each client a special birthday card,” she said.
