Raymond C. Basanda
Raymond C. Basanda, age 80, of Munster, passed away Saturday, December 21, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth "Betty," of 55 years. Son: Mark R. Basanda of Taylors, S.C.; Daughters; Elizabeth Ann (Frank) Patton of Irvine, Calif., and Susan Basanda of Moorpark, Calif. Brother: Clarence M. Basanda of Akron, Ind.; sister: Mary Snn Teska of Trenton, Mich.; Sister-in-law: Ruth (late Richard) Brusch of Vista, Calif.; Five Granddaughters; Sarah (William) Cannon of Lancaster, Ohio, Jennifer Patton of Owings Mills, Md., Becky and Lauren Basanda of Simpsonville, S.C., and Katherine Patton of Irvine Calif.; great-grandson, Will Cannon of Lancaster, Ohio.
Ray was a graduate of Hammond High School, class of 1940. He enlisted in the Army and was a member of the 100th Infantry Division, which fought in France and Germany in WWII. He graduated from Indiana University School of Business. He operated the Basanda Insurance, Real Estate and Tax Service for 35 years. He was a 35 year director of Calumet Federal Savings & Loan (now Security Federal). Ray was a member of St. Thomas More Church, where he was a Eucharistic Minister. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Msgr. Weis Council. Ray was a 17 year member of the St. Catherine Hospital Cardiac Fitness Center.
Funeral services will be Friday, December 27, 2002, at 9:30 a.m. at the Burns-Kish Funeral Home, 8415 Calumet Ave., Munster, with a 10 a.m. Mass at St. Thomas More Church with Fr. Richard Emerson officiating. Burial will be at St. John Cemetery, Hammond. Geraldine M. "Geri" Breu
Geraldine M. "Geri" Breu, age 71, of Munster, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, at the University of Chicago Hospital. She is survived by her husband, Albert J.; two daughters, Jane Breu of Chicago, and Janet (Jack) Pearman of Munster; two granddaughers, Katie and Colleen Pearman of Munster; one brother, Don (Nancy) Robinson of Hernando, Miss.; numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Pat Burk.

Geri was a wonderful, caring wife, mother, grandmother and friend and was always upbeat and happy and such a joy to be around. She enjoyed her granddaughters, flower-gardening, golf, riding her bike to garage sales, and a good game of cards. She displayed her humor, strength and resilience in everything she did. Arnold M. Engel
Arnold M. Engel age 85, of Highland, passed away Monday, Dec. 23, 2002. Survived by his wife, Jennie (nee Cole), of 60 years. One daughter, Bernadette (Robert) Duncan of Lake Placid, Fla.; two granddaughters, Amy (David) McCain of Sebring, Fla., and Lisa (Gregory) Hall of Rome, Ga.; four great-grandchildren: Jessica and Kailey McCain, Matthew and Joshua Hall; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by parents, Anton and Anna Engel and seven brothers and one sister.

Mr. Engel was a member of Our Lady of Grace Church, Highland; member of Catholic Order of Forresters and the Highland Senior Citizens. He was retired from City Services in East Chicago with 29 years of service and also retired from the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, with over 10 years of service.
John R. "Sonny" Fay
John R. "Sonny" Fay, age 53, of Hobart, passed away Monday, Dec. 23, 2002. He was a lifetime area resident, a longtime employee at AT and T Cable, a member of the Hobart American Legion Post 54 and a member of the Head Hunters Golf League at Indian Ridge. He served his country in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marines.
He is survived by his wife, Maria Dearing of Hobart; his mother, Juanita Fay of Hobart; one step-son, Ike Boyer; one step-daughter, Dawn Boyer, both of Cedar Lake; three brothers, James (Susan Fay of Hobart, Danny (Cathlene) Fay of Hobart, Lenny (Ellen ) Fay of New Chicago; two sisters, Joann (Donald) Evans of Portage, Carol (James) Fitzgerald of Portage; one step-grandchild, Summer Crosser; numerous nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, and other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Francis Fay, and his son Jason Fay.

Helen Fontaine (nee Ivankovich), age 45, of Hobart, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dusan and Stana Ivankovich. Survived by two children: Janie Kljajich and Jeffrey Kljajich, both of Chicago; seven sisters; Smilja Jovanovska of Macedonia, Diane Gligic and Jovanka (Dusan) Jelaca, both of Hobart, Vicky (Momcilo) Kovljenic of Canada, Sally Ivankovich of California, Millie (Don) Lencioni of Highland and Mary Elsey of Portage; also many nieces, nephews and Kumovi.

Evelyn M. Guss (nee Andres), age 93, of Hammond, passed away Monday, Dec. 23, 2002. She is survived by two daughters, Carol (Gus) Pens of Hammond and Mickey (Mike) Scheive of Highland; sister-in-law, Mary Andres of Leesburg, Ind.; three grandchildren: Jeff (Anne) Scheive, Susan (Rob) Ramirez and Cassie Pens; five great-grandchildren: Melanie, Karelyn and Nicole Scheive, Stephen and Erika Ramirez; and loving caregiver, Jane. Preceded in death by her husband Arthur in 1997, one brother, Carl Andres and sister, Emma Jarvis.

Jennie Genetos, age 88, of Merrillville, formerly of Gary, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002. She was a member of SS Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church and a member of the Daughters of Penelope. Jennie and her husband, Chris, were owners of the Copper Kettle Restaurant in Gary.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Chris. Survived by three sons: Lanny (Lily Schaefer) Genetos of Valparaiso, Dr. Basil (Sharon) Genetos of Ft. Wayne and Philip (Dorthea) Genetos of Indianapolis; grandchildren: Chris and Colleen, Damian and Nicole Alexander and Helene; and sister, Tula Kalleres of Merrillville.

Rojelio Jimenez, age 42, of Whiting, passed away Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, at home. He is survived by his parents, Chuey and Minnie Jimenez; one daughter, Corina; five sisters: Margie (late Edward) Pena of Chicago, Eva Rebles of Chicago, Susie (Stanley) Kasmerski of Hammond, Yolanda Jimenez of Whiting and Nyda Carmona of Chicago. four brothers: China (Sylvia) Jimenez of Chicago, Alfonso Jimenez and Michael Jimenez of Whiting and Angel Zavala of Glenwood, Ill.; also, numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Jimenez was preceded in death by his brother, Pedro in July of 2001 and niece, Sonya "Crystal" Valdez on Nov. 1, 2002.
