Alma Cargill was a fun-loving woman, said her nephew, Woody Feeler.

She was very independent, and she loved country music and making crafts.

“She liked to do things herself,” he said. “She never went anywhere without looking her best. She would get all dolled up to go to the store.”

Alma Cargill, 95, a Hobart resident for more than 60 years, died Aug. 20. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Dr. A.L. Anderson and Lafayette Cargill.

Feeler said his aunt was never afraid to try new things. She earned her high school diploma later in life, learned Spanish, and loved to visit horse racetracks.

She did extensive traveling with her first husband, Dr. A.L. Anderson, and had visited every state in the country except for Hawaii, Feeler said. She also had visited Canada and Mexico.

After her first husband passed away and she married Lafayette Cargill, she began doing more crafting, Feeler said. She enjoyed knitting, but also enjoyed making miniature furniture and specialty lampshades.

“She would take little cans, cut them and craft them into furniture. She’d upholster them and sell them at craft fairs,” he said. “Her second husband was a craftsman, and they would buy old lamps and rewire them and make lamp shades together.”

She also enjoyed dancing and enjoyed going to Sherwood in Schererville or the Moose and Elks lodges in Hobart for ballroom or line dancing, he said.

“She lived a great life,” Feeler said.
