Anthony Miller was a hard worker who liked to do things with his hands, said his sister, Elizabeth Starewicz.
“He was a hard worker until he was in his late 60s, liking to be hands-on repairing things and building items out of wood along with sewing leather bags,” his sister said. “Working was his hobby."
Anthony F. Miller, 74, of Crown Point and formerly of Gary and Munster, died Dec. 30. He was a resident of Bridges in Crown Point.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Elizabeth Miller.
When he was young, he helped a local shoe repairman. When he was at the Indiana School For the Blind, he built a replica of St. Casimir, his childhood church.
He greatly benefited from Arc Bridges, she said. He enjoyed doing piece work including packing soap from Lever Brothers and folding towels.
“Arc Bridges was his life,” she said. “I don’t know what he would have done without it.”
He enjoyed watching Lawrence Welk and listening to the news and country music, his sister said. He also enjoyed Arby’s beef sandwiches, McDonald’s burgers and KFC mashed potatoes and gravy.
She said her brother had a great sense of right and wrong.
“He would often say that someone he’d heard about in the news was making a mockery of the system,” she said.
Starewicz said her brother had a serious approach to life.
“When he got to know you and he knew you respected him, he would get this wry smile on his face,” she said. “He laughed practically only when he realized you were aware of his current charade he was trying to fool you with.”
