Nicholas J. Backe, age 92, of Merrillville, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, February 27, 2003. He retired from King-Cast Foundry. He was a member of St. Stephen, Martyr Catholic Church and the Catholic Order of Foresters. Member of Harvest House Merrillville Senior Citizens Club and Lucky Dollar Club. Preceded in death by sons, Michael and Eddie Backe and grandson, Stephen Michael Backe. Survivors: Loving wife of 67 years, Dorothy Backe of Merrillville; three sons: James Backe of East Chicago, Ralph (Ellen) Backe of Crystal Lake, Illinois and David Backe of Rosewell, Georgia; two daughters: Mary (Stephen) Tomko and Monica (Tom) Nowesnick, both of Merrillville; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Andrew Backe of Crown Point; one sister, Marie Ruthkowske of Crete, Illinois; one sister-in-law, Judy Backe of Gary and one brother-in-law, Andrew Backe of Crown Point.

Dorothy Barick, age 82, of Dyer, IN, formerly of the East Side, passed away on Wednesday, February 26, 2003. She is survived by sons, Peter (Diane) Barick and David (Joyce) Barick, and daughter, Cindy Cronin; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her husband, Peter in 1987 and daughter, Barbara Humphrey in 1968.

Survived by two sons Lester (Aileen) Barnard of Kentucky and Kim (Terri) Barnard of Portage, IN; daughter, Joyce Smith of Tennessee; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Leonard (Evelyn) Collins of Hammond, IN and Fred Collins of California; two sisters, Nola Jackson and Florence (Jr.) Cody both of Kentucky.

Helen Margaret Beck (nee Trainor), age 81, formerly of Cedar Lake, IN, passed away at the Chicagoland Christian Village on February 27, 2003. She is survived by three sons: Richard (Charlene) Beck of Cedar Lake, Kenneth (Bonnie) Beck of Knox, IN and James (Patricia) Beck of Lowell; 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert.

A Mass will be celebrated at Holy Name Catholic Church, Cedar Lake, IN, on Saturday March 1, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. with Father Jim Gannon, O.F.M., officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, Evergreen Park, IL. Joseph H. "Joe" Conn, Jr., age 43, of Hammond, passed away on Thursday, February 27, 2003. He was preceded in death by his parents, Doris and Joseph Conn and a brother, Melvin Conn. He is survived by two sisters, Virgie Urquidi of Merrillville and Sandra (Robert) Marcum of Hammond; special sister-in-law, Karen Conn of Hammond. six nieces; Doris, Krystal, Kellie, Christine, Carrie and Sherri; and a great niece, Cassandra; two nephews, Brandon and Matthew;and foster children: Angelina Vick and Jason Tamez, both of Hammond.

Pearl Elizabeth De Barge, age 90, of Dyer, Indiana, passed away on Friday, February 28, 2003. Survived by her loving daughter, Marilyn (Alfred) Frank of Dyer, IN; six grandchildren: Larry (Kimberly) Frank, Gary Frank, Thomas De Barge, Art (Regina) De Barg, Mary Ann (Dan) Sapp, and Rose Marie (Dean) Pittenger; nine great-grandchildren: Katie Frank, Jeremiah, Jessica and Samuel Frank, Eric De Barge, Steven and Linda Sapp, and Misty and David Garza; one brother, Jerome (Susie) De Bold of Lampasas, TX; many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her loving husband, Thomas, son Jack De Bage and grandson, David Frank.

Frederick J. "Dave" Kuss, age 76, of Valparaiso, passed away Thursday, February 27, 2003 after a lengthy illness at Porter Memorial Hospital, Valparaiso. He was born on February 19, 1927 in Wanatah to Frederick and Grace (Grieger) Kuss. Frederick was a life long farmer in Porter County, operating Division Acres Farm. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during WWII. Frederick was a member of the Salem United Church of Christ, and the American Legion Post #403 of Wanatah. On May 7, 1949 in Valparaiso he married his loving wife, Barbara E. Williamson, who survives. Also surviving are two sons: Jeffrey Kuss of Valparaiso and Kevin (Vicki) Kuss of Kalamazoo, MI; two daughters, Joanna Kuss of Kalamazoo, MI and Terri Jean Kuss of Wanatah; one brother, William (Lucille) Kuss; two sisters, Virginia (James) Bush and Mary (Wayne) Wakeman; four grandchilden: Michael (Vicki) Ruffalo, Tracy (Rick) Lewis, Angela (Keith) De Klein and Chad (Terra) Nightingale; eight great-grandchildren: Ryan,

Paul J. Mackowski, age 79, lifelong resident of Calumet City, IL, returned home to his Heavenly Father on Wednesday, February 26, 2003. He is survived by two sons, Robert (Vivian) Mackowski of Clinton, TN and Richard (Chris) Mackowski of Dyer, IN. Two loving grandchildren, Nicole and Paul Mackowski of Dyer, IN. Paul was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Josephine, his parents, Veronica and John Mackowski and one brother Edward Mackowski.

Mr. Mackowski was a retired employee of Ameircan Steel Foundries/Amsted after 43 years of service. A member of the American Steel 25-Year Club. He was a graduate of St. Andrew's School and attended Thorton Fractional North. He was a member of St. Victor Church for 50 years where he served as usher for many of them. Mr. Mackowski was also a WWII U.S. Navy Veteran who served aboard the U.S.S. Yorktown as an Aviation Machinist.A lifetime member of Calumet Memorial Post #330 American Legion, who's members will conduct Port Everlasting Services Sunday at 7:00 p.m. Paul was a loving father and grandfather who will be greatly missed. Charles E. McNeely "Charlie" age 54, of Crown Point, IN and formerly of Kentucky, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, February 26, 2003. He was an area resident since 1986, and a U.S. Navy Veteran.

Charlie is survived by his wife of 32 years, Kaye McNeely, Daughter, Christie (Jamison) Dixon of Crown Point. Son, Eric McNeely (fiancee Janet Gettler) of Indianapolis. Two grandchildren, Spencer Charles Dixon and Danielle Dixon.Special friend, Frank Ortega of Crown Point, Also, many cousins, aunts, uncles and family friends.

Gerald was an active member of the Dyer United Methodost Church having served as trustee, head usher and numerous other committees. He retired from Fred Beyer Company and was a member of the International Labor Union Local #5. He coached SVSA Little League for many years. HE was a member of the Griffith Masonic Lodge #735 and a Veteran of the United States Army.
