Frederick W. "Fred" Abel, age 85, of Munster, passed away on Sunday, June 8, 2003 at The Community Hospital in Munster. Survived by his wife of 57 years, Alberta M. (nee Davis); three children, Ted (Shanda) Abel of DesMoines, Iowa, Cindy (Kenneth) Keilman of Munster, IN and Fred (Debbie) Able Jr. of Valparaiso, IN; eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; two sisters, Ella Stark and Marge Taylor, both of Sacramento, CA. Preceded in death by his brother, Robert, and sister, Emma Whitehead.

Fred was a lifetime resident of the Calumet area. He had served with the United States Army in WWII and was a member of the Hessville Community Service Post #232 American Legion. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Hessville and Garfield Lodge #569 F.&A.M. He was a retired employee of Inland Steel Corp. #2 open hearth where he worked as a mechanic crane repairman for 35 years. He also served as a Scout Master and bowled and played dart ball for the First Christian Church of Hessville. He helped in formulating the first little league in Munster and had been an Auxiliary Policeman and Volunteer Fireman for 38 years for the Town of Munster. A Memorial Fund, in memory of Fred Able, is being established in favor of the First Christian Church of Hessville.

Edward Lee langston, age 40, of Portage, passed away on Monday, June 9, 2003. He was born on August 19, 1962 in Gary, IN the son of Aaron Lee and Edna (Lothenore) Langston. Edward was a talented freelance artist who loved to draw. He was an avid movie memorabilia collector and movie buff and he loved to travel.

Kate volunteered to crochet 300 baby afghans for Munster Community Hospital and East Chicago Community Health Center. She received a special award from the Lutheran Home for making lap robes for most of the residents. Kate was a very lovely lady who shared her time, talent and ability with anyone who asked for her help or was in need. She devoted her very active life to her family, friends, God and Church. William "Bill" R. Wilken, age 70, of Calumet City, IL, passed away Sunday, June 8, 2003 in St. Margaret-North, Hammond, IN. He is survived by his wife Getty; one daughter: Dawn (Jim) Mack; three grandchildren: Rachele, Billy and Little Dawn; one sister, Shirley Eilenfeldt; one brother, Eugene Wilken, nephew, Brian Sissel and many other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Charlotte Sissel.
Born in Denahm, IN, he was the son of the late Rudolph and late Elizabeth Evans Wilken. He lived on the East Side of Chicago until 1963 when he and Betty were married. Mr. Wilken was a member of Teamsters #142 and #705. He retired in 1998 from Bulkmaster in Hammond, IN.

William M. Young, Jr.
William M. Young Jr., age 79, of Crown Point, passed away Monday, June 9, 2003 at Wittenberg Lutheran Village in Crown Point, IN. He is survived by his wife Josephine "Jo". Two daughters: Jan (Gary Lane) Young of California and Susan Lee (Angelo) Pappas of Crown Point. One Grandson: Christopher Pappas. Three step-grandchildren: Mary (George) Poponask, Angie (Frank) Grippo and Milton Pappas. One brother: Fred (Eloise) Young of Frankfort, IN. One sister: Marjorie Huntsinger of Florida. He was preceded in death by sisters: Mary Herndon, Roberta Hartle, Helen Holtzinger and Esther Hower.

Mr. Young was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus Cardinal Stritch Council #4620. An Army Veteran of WWII, American Legion Fred Schmidt Post #20 and the Lions Club.
