Mildred Labda

(nee Haluska)

Whiting, IN

Mildred Labda (nee Haluska), age 99, of Whiting, passed away Friday, February 21, 2003 at the Hartsfield Village Care Center, Munster. She was the beloved wife of the late Andrew Labda who passed away September 19, 1978. She is survived by three children, Martha (late Edward) McKinley of Phoenix, AZ, Godfrey and Lodie Labda, both of Whiting; two granddaughters, Dr. Susan (Steve) Day of Phoenix, AZ and Martha Ann McKinley of New Jersey; several cousins in Slovakia. She was also preceded in death by her son, Gerald Labda.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, February 26, 2003, 10:00 a.m. at the St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church, Whiting, with the Rev. Kevin Bergmann officiating. Interment, Concordia Cemetery, Hammond. Visitation at the Baran Funeral Home, 1235-119th St., Whiting, Tuesday, 3:00 to 7:00 p.m., and at the church Wednesday, from 9:00 a.m . to time of service. Devotional Service at the funeral home, Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.

Mildred Labda was born on December 3, 1903 in Dolny-Kubin, Slovakia to George and Sophie (Figuly) Haluska and emmigrated to the United States at the age of 8. A member of St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church, Whiting, where she and her husband Andrew were instrumental in keeping the Christmas tradition of Oplatky making alive and she was also a member of the Dorcas Society. Gary L. Long, age 48, of Whiting, passed away on Saturday, February 22, 2003. He is survived by one son, Gary M. Long of Hammond; two daughters, Tamara (William) Cox of Highland and Allison Long of Hammond; mother, Mary (Charles) Carter of Hammond; one brother, James (Barbara) Long of Illinois; one sister, Ramona (Carrey) Mitchell of Hammond; several nieces and nephews; former wife, Patricia Long of Hammond.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, February 26, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at the Kuiper Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Bob Parnell officiating. Burial, Memory Lane Memorial Park, Schererville, IN. Mr. Long was employed at Tri Electronics in Hammond for 22 years.

Edward A. Lukawski, age 80, of East Chicago, passed away on Monday, February 24, 2003. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Helen (nee Koscielniak); two sons, Edward (Janny) Lukawski of San Francisco, CA and Joseph (Vicki) Lukawski of Lakes of the Four Seasons: five daughters, Katherine (Mark) Nagdeman of Hammond, Nancy (John) Castro of West Allis, WI, Barbara (Norbert) Lyon of Highland, IN, Mary (Dr. Kim) Kessler, of Lakes of the Four Seasons and JoEllen (Dennis) Grabelle of Highland; nine grandchildren: Benjamin and Veronica Lyon, Kyle Nagdeman, Kara, Kristyn and Kevin Kessler, Joseph and Amanda Lukawski and Audrey Lukawski; one brother, Chester (Val) Lukawski of East Chicago; two sisters, Victoria (late Andrew) Jakubowicz of DeMotte and Helen (late John) Zenone of Cedar Lake; one sister-in-law, Rosalie Koscielniak of Florida; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents and children, John and Mary and brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Helene Lukawski.

Mr. Lukawski was a lifelong resident of East Chicago. Proprietor of Mike's Hardware. Former manager of A&P Grocery Store. Former Chief Deputy for North Township Trustee. Former Lake County Clerk serving two terms, He was a Veteran of WWII U.S. Army, 82nd Airborne. Founding member and Past Commander of American Legion Allied Post 369. He will be missed by all who knew him. He was a caring individual who was always there to help someone in need. He was a wonderful husband, father and Dzia Dzia. His family is greatful for all the love and life's lessons that he shared with us. In lieu of flowers, Ed would like you to take someone you loved out to dinner. Veronica "Vernie" Ann Massa, age 88, of Valparaiso, formerly of Gary and Hobart, passed away at home on Monday, February 24, 2003. Vernie was a graduate of Froebel High School, Class of 1933. She was Manager of the Ladies Dress Department at J.C. Penney Department Store in downtown Gary for 22 years. She was a member of St.Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Valparaiso and was a former member of St. Casimir Church in Gary. She was a member of the Daughters of Isabella, Bishop Noll Circle No.359.

Vernie was preceded in death by her parents Walter and Antonia Waxner and two brothers, Tony and Bill Waxner.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, John P. Massa; two sons,Jay Massa of St.John and John (Kathy) Massa of Valparaiso; six grandchildren, David, John (Donna), Keith (Fiancee Kristen Montgomery) Massa, Steve (Krista) Massa, Missy (Craig) Ball and Megan Massa; three great grandchildren, Steve Massa and Emily and Lauren Ball; many nieces and nephews; sister, Emily Valasina of Merrillville; two sisters in law, Helen Waxner of Vero Beach, Florida and Jeanne Waxner of Grass Valley, California.

Michael B. Perrine, age 44, of Portage, passed away Saturday, February 22, 2003. He was employed as a Supervisor at Bethlehem Steel Co. He was a graduate of Hobart High School, class of 1978. Preceded in death by his father-in-law: Robert Artka. Survived by wife, Linda (Artka) Perrine. Son: Justin Perrine. Parents: Frank and Carol Perrine. Jack W. Pearson, age 70, of East Chicago, IN, passed away on Sunday, February 23, 2003. He is survived by four children: Catherine (Ray) Hanyzewski, Jack W. (Sandy) Pearson, Jeff (Rebecca) Pearson and Mike (Lisa) Pearson; 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; one brother, Raymond Pearson; and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by wife Harriet in November of 2001, and parents, Jack and Beatrice Pearson.

Jack's grandfather, with whom he lived with during his childhood, was one of the survivors of The Titanic which sank in 1912. Jack was a 5 year Letterman at East Chicago Roosevelt High School, class of 1953, and was a lifelong resident of East Chicago.

Helen P. Phillips, Age 87, of Hobart, formerly of Gary 1940, Merrillville, Coral Gables, FL, and FT. Myers, FL. passed away at home on Monday, February 24, 2003. She was a former member of the Forty Third Avenue Presbyterian Church in Gary and a former employee of Sax Fine Footwear in Gary. She was a member of the Griffith Indiana Chapter #583 Order of Eastern Star and a member of Beta Gamma Upsilon, PI Chapter Sorority.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years of marriage, Newell B. Phillips, II, on October 6, 2001 and son George B. Phillips, Sr. of Ogden Dunes, in on November 1, 1982 and sister, Margaret L. Ray of New York. She is survived by one son Newell B. (Marianne) Phillips, III, of Valparaiso, daughter Leanne Phillips Halfman of Hobart, sister V. Ann Potter of Forest, Virginia, grandchildren George B. Phillips, II, Newell B. Phillips, IV, and Melanie (Eugene) Yagelski of Valparaiso, great grandchildren Eugene, Brandon, and Sydney Yagelski, two nieces and one nephew and special friend and caregiver Zita Preiksiene.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Audrey (nee Smith); daughter, Lois (late Nick) Pierce-Turean of Hessville; son, Thomas Pierce of Phoenix, AZ; four grandchildren; Shane (Marilyn) Pierce of Clarksburg. W.V., Angela (Mike) Echterling of Highland, IN, Jeff Turean of Ocala, FL and Deborah Turean of Edwardsburg, MI; three great-grandchildren: Tausha, Gator and Nikki Pierce; and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews including two special nieces, Evelyn (late Irwin) Coffenberry of Woodridge, VA and Marilyn (Dale) Lewis of Mesa, AZ, and nephew, Dr. James (Cheri) Boland of Crown Point, IN Preceded in death by his brother, Luther Pierce.

Mr. Pierce was a resident of the Calumet Region for over 60 years. He retired in 1971 after 30 years of service as a Yard Master in the Transportation Dept. at Inland Steel Co. He was a member of the Covenant Presbyterian Church of Hessville, the Inland Steel 25-Year Club and the Management Association. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Rebuilding Fund of Covenant Presbyterian Church would be appreciated.

Donna B. Porter, age 75, of Hammond, passed away Sunday, February 23, 2003. She is survived by four daughters, Pamela Dickerson of Hammond, Patricia (Sam Huston) Mead of California, Penelope Dickerson of Portage and Polly (Andy) Messer of Whiting; three sons, Rex (late Margo) of Hammond, Mark (Maggie) of Schererville and Clifton Porter of St. Joseph, MI; twenty grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; three brothers, Oscar (Candy), Dick (Joyan) and Roger Holdridge, all of Iowa. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifton, grandson, Joshua Mead and brothers, Everett and Pat Holdridge.

He is survived by his one daughter, Shirley Hedrick of Crown Point, IN; three sons: James Rex and Ronald (Linda) Rex, both of Crown Point, IN and Mark (Diane) Rex of Griffith, IN; two sisters: Faye Ranus of Colorado, Eunice (Jerry) Carter of Lafayette, IN; two brothers, Bob (Lil) Rex of Napa, CA and Richard (Kay) Rex of Portland, OR; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in d death by his wife, Cecilia.

Connie Robison, age 69, left to be with her Lord on Sunday, February 23, 2003 at Methodist Hospital Southlake Campus in Merrillville, Indiana. Connie grew up in Arkansas and has made Northwest Indiana her home for most of her life. She retired from United States Steel Tube Works several years ago. She leaves to cherish her memory: her mother, Augusta Wacaster; One daughter: Linda Robison. One son: James M. Robison. Grandson: Michael Robison and Granddaughter: Michele (John) Greve. Two sisters: Carolyn Knight and Tommie (Fred) Grim and one brother: Jim (Renetta) Wacaster.

Agnes Josephine Sanders, age 77, of Portage, passed away Friday, February 21, 2003 at her residence. She was a former member of Hammond Baptist Church. Agnes was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin Sanders in 1985. Agnes is survived by three children: Christine Guretin of Portage, Pat Vajgert of California and Ronald Thomas of Houston, Texas; and two sisters: Josephine Kraus and Mildred Twarog, both of Chicago, IL.

Dorothy Shaw (nee Meyer), age 89, was a resident of Chicagoland Christian Village, Crown Point and formerly lived in Hammond, IN, passed away February 22, 2003. Born January 22, 1914 in Vincennes, IN, to Julia (Holtman) and William Meyer. She is survived by three children: Herbertine (Wayne) Peck of Highland, Bernarr (Patricia) Shaw of Columbus, IN and Mona (Dr. Gary) Nondorf of Valparaiso. She was a wonderful grandmother of eight grandchildren: Carla (Jeffrey) Latham, Shelley (Matthw Didier) Peck, Kevin Olson, Travis (Lari) Shaw, Kera (Andrew) Helwig, Amy (Kevin) Faughnder, Matthew and Brittney Nondorf; and great-grandmother of eight. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert, March 5, 2000.

Dorothy retired from working in the cafateria at Edison School in Hammond and was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ, Highland, IN

Member of various Slovak and Croatian organizations. Retired from Gary Screw and Bolt Co. Preceded in death by husband, Joseph, brothers, William Sevcik and Edward Sefcik, sisters, Theresa Sefcik, Agnes Solovais and Sophie Checkon. Survived by one daughter, Mary (John) Crawford of Valparaiso, two grandchildren Amanda and Daniel of Valparaiso; three sisters-in-law, Anna Fadell and Mary (Jay) Bradach, both of Portage and Dorothy Dragich of Crown Point; many nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews and many good friends and neighbors.

Daniel T. Struble

Daniel T. Struble, age 84, of Portage passed away Sunday, February 23, 2003 in the VNA Hospice Center in Valparaiso. He retired from U.S. Steel where he worked as a Pump Attendant. Daniel served his country during WWII in the Army, and will be remembered by his family as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grand-father and great-great-grandfather.

Daniel is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Elizabeth, sons: William (Cindy) Struble of Clearwater, FL, Daniel Struble of IL, daughter, Elizabeth Ann Clouse of Chesterton, brother, Emery (Julie) Struble of Omaha, NE; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson and a very special friend, Helen Hanson.

Grace B. Stasak (nee Corbeille), Age 84, passed away Saturday, February 22, 2003, at Horton V.N.A. Hospice in Valparaiso. Grace was born February 21, 1919 in Racine Wisconsin to Arthur P. and Mary Sabastion Corbeille who preceded her in death. Also loving husband of 50 years Michael "Mike" Stasak on January 15, 1991, loving son-in-law Ronald W. Thomas on February 4, 2003 and brothers Richard, Norbert and Eugene Arthur Jr. and sister Marian. Grace is survived by daughters Barbara (late Ron) Thomas of Valparaiso with whom she lived with for the past 20 years and daughter Michaelene (Jim) (Jocko) Mikusevich of Hobart. Three granddaughters Michelle (Scott) Thompson of Belleville, Michigan, Dr. Christine Mikusevich, O.D. of Lafayette, IN and Jacqueline Mikusevich of Bloomington, IN. Special nephew Jim Corbeille of Miller, IN, brother-in-law John Niemiec of Racine, Wisconsin, sister-in-law Eleanor Corbeille of Portage and many other nieces and nephews.

Grace was a member of St. Michael's Byzantine Catholic Church, The Rosary Society and The Ladies Guild. She also volunteered on Fridays to make peroghi and worked at the fish fry for the past 25 years. Grace was greatly loved by all and will be missed especially by her daughters, son-in-law and her three granddaughters and nephew Jim who she was so very proud of and loved so very much. Mr. Valovcin was formerly employed for over 20 years with Inland Steel. Past member of the Isaac Walton League of Griffith, and was a life member of the NRA. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Huntington's Disease Society in Mr. Valovcin's memory.

Norma J. Wilson

Norma J. Wilson, age 74, of Indianapolis, passed away on Saturday, February 22, 2003 in Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Norma was a former Harbor Heights, FL resident, and also a local area resident. She retired from K-mart in 1995, and will be remembered by her family as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She is survived by her daughters, Frances J. (Dennis) Shaul of Indianapolis and Linda (Marvin) Eichelberger of Valparaiso, son, Ralph (Diane) Wilson of Hobart, brother, John (Jo) Price of AR, sisters, Nancy (William) Crussen of Hobart, Patricia (Bob) Howisen of San Pierre, IN, Linda (William) Lindsey of Roselawn, IN; sister-in-law, Shirley Price of Hobart; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Lyle, parents. Percy and Kathryn Price, one brother, Robert and one sister, Kathy.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 27, 2003 at Rees Funeral Home, 600 West Old Ridge Rd., Hobart, with Rev. John Berlin officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 26, 2003 in Rees Funeral Home.
