Stephen A. Matlock

East Chicago

Stephen A. Matlock, age 80, of East Chicago, passed away on Friday, March 7, 2003. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Lillian (nee Prajzner); two sons, Stephen M. (Linda) Matlock of Crown Point and Mark (Deborah) Matlock of Highland; one daughter, Linda Matlock of Las Vegas, NV; three granddaughters, Hayley Leia Matlock, Bethany Matlock and Abigail Cantwell; one grandson, Gavin Noah Matlock; one step-granddaughter, Sarah Bass; special family friend, Dianne Bach; one sister, Stella (Bob) Cahn; one sister-in-law, Jean (late John) Matlock; one brother-in-law, Walter (late Stephanie) Sierkowski; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Rose, brothers, Joe, Stanley, Walter, Julian and John, sisters, Stephanie Sierkowski and Marie Glinski and sister-in-law, Margaret (late Julian) Matlock.

Funeral Services will be held Monday, March 10, 2003 at 9:30 a.m. at the Lesniak Funeral Home, 4918 Magoun Ave., East Chicago, for 10:00 a.m. Mass at St. Stanislaus Church with Msgr. John J. Siekierski officiating. Burial, Holy Cross Cemetery, Calumet City, IL. Mr. Matlock was a lifelong resident of East Chicago. A member of St. Stanislaus Church and the Holy Name Society. Retired employee of Inland Steel Company in 1987 with 42 years service and member of Inland Credit Union and United Steel Workers Local #1010. Committeeman of Inland employees picnic and children's Christmas party toy distribution. Past President of Southside Boosters Club. Past member of Roosevelt Kennedy Club. Veteran of WWII serving in the U.S. Army European Theatre, Normandy Invasion and Battle of the Bulge. Life Member of American Legion Allied Post #369 serving as Commander in 1974-1975. Past Chairman for 25 years of the Hines Hospital visitations in Chicago. Member of American Legion Allied Post #369 Past Commanders Club. Past 1st District American Legion Vice Commander. Member of V.F.W. Post 3029, the 40 and 8 Voiture 470 and member of the Century Club for over 25 years. In lieu of flowers, Mass stipends or contributions to St. Stanislaus Church Building Fund

Dolores D. "Dee" Novalick


Dolores D. "Dee" Novalick, age 56, a lifelong resident of Hammond, Indiana, passed away on Thursday, March 6, 2003. She is survived by two devoted sons: James (Jennifer) Novalick of Arkansas and Philip (Karen) Novalick of Tennessee. She was the devoted sister of David A. (Carrie) Benak of Vancouver, WA, Richard A. (Vickie) Benak, Sr. of Schererville, IN and Dennis P. (Georgean) Benak of Hammond, IN; four grandchildren: Constance, Kimberly, Kara and Vanessa; Uncle Don Plesner, Sr. and Aunts Marie Wohrley and Grace Plesner; and several nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her husband, James.

"Dee" was a former member of St. John Bosco Church of Hammond. She baby sat for many children who became a part of her extended family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations would be greatly appreciated.

Harry C. Nulf Sr., age 76, of Valparaiso, passed away at 8:20 p.m. on Thursday, March 6, 2003 at Waters of Duneland Nursing Home, Chesterton, IN. Born February 28, 1927 in Jackson Twp, Porter Co., IN, to the late William and Agnes (Linderman) Nulf. Married June 25, 1949 in Michigan City, IN to Helen Marcinia, who survives. Also survived by sons: Harry (Paula) Nulf, Jr. of Three Rivers, MI, Kevin (Gail) Nult of Valparaiso, IN, Randy (Vicki) Nulf and Roger (Margie) Nulf of Michigan City, IN, Scott (Becky) Nulf of Carbon Hill, OH; daughter, Marjorie (Leroy) Reese of Phoenix, AZ; step-sister: Velma Nulf of Hobart, IN; serveral nieces and nephews; ex-daughter-in-law, Jane Nulf of Michigan City, IN; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by parents, sisters, Bertha Bechincki, and Myra Blohm and brothers, Marvin and Bennitt Nulf.

Marilyn Jo Parson, age 53, of Hammond, passed away Wednesday, March 5, 2003. She is survived by her mother, Mary (nee Pazdur) of Hammond; two brothers, Robert (Maureen) Parson of San Diego, CA and Jack (Valerie) Parson of St. John, IN; one sister, Charlene (Wheeler) Newman of Thomasville, GA; and five nephews. Preceded in death by her father, Robert E. Parson. Marilyn Jo was a lifelong area resident.

On February 21, 2003, Mildred Petrunich peacefully left this world to be with her Heavenly Father. She was preceded in death by her husband, George S. Petrunich, parents, Albert and Kate Szarek, sister, Helen Funk and brothers, John Szarek and Anthony Janik. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Janet Sue Petrunich of Winchester, TN; grandson, Jason Fox of Winchester, TN, brother and sister-in-law, Matthew and LaVerne Szarek of Las Vegas. NV. Mrs. Petrunich was laid to rest next to her husband at the Rose Hill Memorial Gardens Mausoleum with Father John Kirk officiating.

Nell Mae Rork, age 77, of South Bend, formerly of Merrillville, IN, passed away Wednesday, March 5, 2003. She was a former claims adjuster for Braman Insurance. Preceded in death by husband Eugene Rork in 1994. She is survived by her loving daughters: Darlene (Joel) Kneisler of Tinley Park, IL and Linda (Jeff) Proffitt of South Bend, IN. Two beloved grandchildren: Joseph Smulevitz and Amanda Kneisler, both of Tinley Park, IL. Numerous loving Nieces and Nephews.

Dorothy D. Sepesi, age 81, of Schererville, Indiana, passed away on Tuesday March 4, 2003. She is survived by two children. Dr. John Sepesi of Houston, TX and Jessica (William) Simes of Schererville, IN; five grandchildren: Zachary and Dr. Joshua Sepesi, Benjamin, Jocelyn and William Simes; and two great-grandchildren: Renee and Avery Sepesi. Susan M. Rice

Susan M. Rice, 55, of Jacksonville, Ill., died Thursday morning, March 6, 2003, at her residence.

She was born Feb. 19, 1948, in East Chicago, the daughter of Joseph Rudolph and Virginia Gorondi Zaborski. She married Charles E. Rice on Jan. 11, 1975, in Hammond, and he survives. She is also survived by a daughter, Rebecca Bathje (husband, Matthew) of Aurora, Ill.; three sons, Michael Rice (wife, Racheal) of Lansing; Charles Rice Jr.; and James Rice of Jacksonville; three brothers, Joseph Zaborski of Merrillville; Tim Zaborski (wife, Sandy) of Lansing; and Greg Zaborski (wife, Kathy) of Richfield, Utah; four sisters, Roseann Rippe (husband, John) of Vale, N.C.; Melody Zaborski of Cosby, Tenn.; Corrine Sumichrast (husband, Frank) of Merrillville; and Virginia Whittington (husband, Lynn) of Georgia; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Mrs. Rice was employed for the past several years by Jacksonville School District 117 in the cafeteria of Lincoln Elementary School. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church and a longtime member of the church choir. She was a devoted volunteer leader in Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. She enjoyed Civil War re-enacting with her family as a part of Venture Crew #1861, commonly known as "Terry's Rangers." A skilled tole painter, she was a member of the Society of Decorative Painters.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Trinity Episcopal Church in Jacksonville. Burial services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield, Ill. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Sunday at the Gillham-Buchanan Funeral Home, 326 W. Sandra T. Stegner (nee Brancyk), age 52, of Griffith, IN, passed away on Wednesday, March 5, 2003. Survived by husband, John; father, John Barancyk of Griffith; and many good friends. Preceded in death by son, John, Dec. 2, 2001 and mother, Frances Barancyk.

John A. Stoica, age 77, of Highland, Indiana, passed away on Friday, March 7, 2003. Survived by wife, Helga; one son, John B. (Jenny) Stoica of Highland; one daughter, Heidi (fiance, Stephen Pierce) Stoica of Munster; two grandchildren, Erica and Joseph Stoica; sister-in-law, Eva (Erwin) Krause of Germany; Nasi: Constantin, (Margaret) Ardeleanu of Valparaiso, and many special friends, their children and grandchildren, and relatives in Romania and Germany.

Harry A. Tuinstra, age 82, of South Holland, IL passed away on Friday, March 7, 2003 at St. James VITAS Hospice in Chicago Heights, IL. Mr. Tuinstra is survived by his wife: Lois (nee Nelson); two sons: Robert (Brenda) Tuinstra of Dolton, IL and William Tuinstra of Chelan, WA; one daughter: Janet (Jim) Hertz of Crete, IL; 12 granchildren and one great-grandson, two brothers: Jake (Sue) Tuinstra of Crete, IL and Chuck (Bertha) Tuinstra of Tucson, AZ and one sister: Greta (Joe) Biegel of Crete, IL. Mr. Tuinstra was preceded in death by one son, the late Jack Tuinstra in 1955 and one brother, the late Fred (Clasina) Tuinstra in 1997.

Cathy Jo Walker, age 44, of Hammond, IN, went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, March 5, 2003 at Methodist Hospital-Southlake Campus. She is survived by her mother, Willia Walker of East Chicago; three brothers, Alfred Walker of East Chicago, Rev. Leon (Florida) Walker of Gary and LeRoy Walker of Little Rock, AK; two sisters, Willia Smith of Kankakee, IL and Patricia (Paul) Anderson of East Chicago; two aunts, Bertha Frazier of East Chicago and Rosetta Walker of Tuskegee, AL, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends. Sarah Ann Widmoyer


Sarah Ann Widmoyer age, 85, of Valparaiso, IN, died March 6, 2003 at 1:35 p.m. at Life Care Center of The Willows in Valparaiso. Born, Jan. 30, 1918 in Kosciusko County, IN to the late Mose and Sarah (Slabaugh) Miller. Preceded in death by husbands, Ervin Miller, and Lester Widmoyer (1949), he preceded her. Survived by daughter, Shirley (John) Hall of Valparaiso; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Preceded in death by husbands, parents, grandson Richard, two sisters Fannie and Elva and six brothers, Manases, Emanuel, Milo, Alvin, Mose and Edward.

Mrs. Widmoyer was a lifelong area resident and was a Homemaker. Attended First Baptist Church in Bremen.

Phillip J. Ybarra


Phillip J. Ybarra, age 48, of Hammond, Indiana died early Thursday morning March 6, 2003 at the University of Chcago Hospitals in Chicago, Illinois after a brief illness. Mr. Ybarra was born on July 15, 1954 in Chicago, Illinois to Anthony Ybarra and Elia (Hernandez) Villarruel who preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death is his beloved father who raised him, Peter Villarruel, who died in August of 1981. Survivors include his loving sisters Anna (William) Torres of Schererville, Indiana and Sara (Mauro) Jimenez of East Chicago, Indiana, his loving brothers, Edward (Elsa) Villarruel of Hobart, Indiana, Peter (Rosie) Villarruel of Hammond, Indiana, Javier (Maria) Villarruel and Henry Villarruel, both of whom are of East Chicago, Indiana. Also surviving is his maternal grandmother, Hermelinda Hernandez of East Chicago, Indiana, his loving girlfriend of 11 years, Theresa Hazelwood of Hammond, Indiana and her children Sheresa, Robert and Derrick, and many loving nieces, nephews,

aunts and uncles. Mr. Ybarra was a self-employed auto mechanic for over 25 years and was the owner of Phil's Automotive in East Chicago, Indiana, a member of the Roman Catholic faith and a member of the TKE Fraternity. Family and friends may visit with the family of Mr. Ybarra on Sunday, from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Ridgelawn Funeral Home, 4201 West Ridge Road (219)980-5555 with a Rosary to be recited at 5:00 p.m. and closing prayers at 6:30 p.m. with Pastor Phil Ford of the First Assembly of God officiating in the funeral home chapel.
