Paul J. Mackowski
Paul J. Mackowski, age 79, lifelong resident of Calumet City, IL, returned home to his Heavenly Father on Wednesday, February 26, 2003. He is survived by two sons, Robert (Vivian) Mackowski of Clinton, TN and Richard (Chris) Mackowski of Dyer, IN. Two loving grandchildren, Nicole and Paul Mackowski of Dyer, IN. Paul was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Josephine, his parents, Veronica and John Mackowski and one brother Edward Mackowski.
Funeral services will be held Monday, March 3, 2003, 9:00 A.M. prayers from Hennessy-Nowak Funeral Home, 400 Pulaski Rd., (154th St.), Calumet City, IL, to St. Victor Church Mass 9:30 A.M. He will be laid to eternal rest at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood, IL. Visitation is Sunday, 2:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Mr. Mackowski was a retired employee of Ameircan Steel Foundries/Amsted after 43 years of service. A member of the American Steel 25-Year Club. He was a graduate of St. Andrew's School and attended Thorton Fractional North. He was a member of St. Victor Church for 50 years where he served as usher for many of them. Mr. Mackowski was also a WWII U.S. Navy Veteran who served aboard the U.S.S. Yorktown as an Aviation Machinist.A lifetime member of Calumet Memorial Post #330 American Legion, who's members will conduct Port Everlasting Services Sunday at 7:00 p.m. Paul was a loving father and grandfather who will be greatly missed. Jean F. McMahon, age 60 of Dyer, Indiana, passed away on Friday, February 28, 2003 at St. Margaret Mercy Hospital South. She is survived by her loving husband James, of 29 years. Two loving sons: John Yocum of Kalamazoo, MI and Patrick (JoAnn) Yocum of Union, MI; one loving daughter, Jennifer Reed of Crown Point, IN; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three brothers, Jerry (Sandi) Wagner of Kentucky, Bertram (Iylene) Wagner and Roger Wagner of Indiana; one sister, Carol (Daniel) Shellenberg of Indiana; several nieces and nephews; and best friend, Mary Ann Evolga of Hammond. Preceded in death by her loving son Mark Yocum and daughter Lisa.

HE was a member of the Griffith Masonic Lodge #735 and a Veteran of the United States Army.

Chester W. Napiwocki, age 76, of Highland, Indiana, passed away on Thursday, February 27, 2003, with his loving family at his side. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Josephine who passed away in October of 2002. Chester was a longtime resident of Highland and a lifelong resident of the area. He was a 1945 graduate of East Chicago Washington High School and attended Purdue University. He was a WWII Veteran where he served in the U.S. Navy and achieved the rank of Seaman 1st Class. He retired from Inland Steel in 1986 after 41 years of service as Safety Engineer in the #3 Cold Strip. He was a member of Inland Steel 25-Year Club and Inland Steel Management Association. He also served on the Inland Steel Federal Credit Union Board of Directors for several years. He was very active in politics all of his life and served on many boards, commissions and committees and held several elected positions from Precinct Committeeman to Highland Town Board President. He had recently been presented with an award for 30 years of service to the Town of Highland. He was a member of Our Lady of Grace Church in Highland. Chester loved fishing and coaching softball. He was a loving and devoted husband, father,

Jeanette Francis Sterbavy, age 96, of Altamonte Springs, FL, formerly of Whiting, IN, passed away on Sunday, February 23, 2003 in Florida. She is survived by four children: Jeanette, Barbara, Jimmy and Bernard; 11 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren.

Jeanette Sterbavy was born on December 19, 1906 in Chicago, Illinois. She was a long time Whiting resident and resided in Altamonte Springs for the past five years. A member of St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church and St. John the Baptist Catholic Church; and was a member of the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Assn. BR. #81.
Derl J. Stines
Derl J. Stines, age 71, of Valparaiso, passed away Friday, February 28, 2003 at the Porter Memorial Hospital in Valparaiso. On July 15, 1931 he was born in Benton Harbor, MI, the son of Chester and Mabel (nee Jess) Stines. He was employed at the Westfield Correction Center, retiring in 1992. On August 28, 1993 he married Jeanette Reisetter Lazinski in Valparaiso. During the Korean War he served with the U.S. Air Force and was also a Army Paratrooper. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and a Charter member of the American Legion Post #502 in South Haven, where he served as their first chaplain. Derl cherished his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife: Jeanette of Valparaiso; four sons: Mike (Sandy) Eberhart of Mishawaka, IN, Kevin Eberhart of Wakarusa, IN, Chris (Judy) Stines of Kouts and Jeff Stines of Indianapolis; one daughter: Kim (Dan) Rosenbaum; grandchildren: Heather Eberhart, Kelly and Julie Eberhart, Nathan and Sarah Stines, Crystal, Greg and Michelle Stines, Jayson and Joshua Ling and two great-grandchildren; three step-children: Wendy (Tony) Shires of Cheyenne, WY, Kelly (Richard) Loveless of Valparaiso and Brian (Kim) Lazinski of Hanover, IN; step-grandchildren: Cody and Austin Dunn, Dylan Shires, Alexander Loveless, Timmy and Chrissy Borman and Hannah Lazinski. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Peggy Zook, his second wife, Patricia Mendoza and grandson, Eric Stines.

Also survived by wife, Daphne Taylor Syler and 5-1/2 children: Jerilyn 13, Brian 12, Cody 8, David 6, Austin 3 and Gracie Elizabeth due in April and a step-son Alan Wujek. Six brothers and sisters: Lisa (Alan) Kinney, Tony (Kim) Syler, Jimmy (Michele) Danaher, Frances Rose, Sam (Mary) Danaher and Dawn Danaher and a stepbrother, Timothy Martin. Maternal great-grandmother Lola Swaim, maternal grandfather, Walter Lasick and wife Joyce. Jerry worked as a truck driver for Argo Paving and Grading and was of the Catholic Faith. He was a devoted husband, father and son and was an avid football fan who enjoyed coaching his son's football team. Elizabeth Thone, age 85, of DeMotte, Indiana, formerly a resident of Highland, passed away on Wednesday, February 26, 2003. She is survived by two sons, Thomas (Patricia) Thone of Arkansas and Robert (Andrea) Thone of Texas; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mary Beaudoin of Crown Point and Norma Jean Thone of Dyer.

Anthony J. (Tony) Tonkovich, passed away Thursday, February 27, 2003. Survived by two sons: Robert S. (Beverly) Tonkovich of Munster and James W. (Mary Ann) Tonkovich of Schererville; three grandchildren, Robert (Lisa) Tonkovich of Oak Lawn, Illinois, Gayle Tonkovich of Whiting and Kathleen Tonkovich of Schererville; two great-granddaughters, Ellen and Emily Tonkovich of Oak Lawn, Illinois; one brother, Matt Tonkovich of East Chicago (preceded in death by his wife, Mary), three sisters, Rose Majewski of Highland (preceded in death by her husband, Anthony), Ann Fary of Merrillville (preceded in death by her husband, Ray), and Kay Smoljan (preceded in death by her husband, Charles); two sisters in law, Gilberte Tonkovich of Lynwood, Illinois and Evelyn Tonkovich of Hammond; many nieces and nephews. Mr. Tonkovich was born March 24, 1919. He was a lifelong resident of East Chicago, graduate of East Chicago Washington High School, served in the U.S. Navy in World War II, retired employee, after many years of service of Inland Steel Company and the City of East Chicago. Member of Inland Steel 25 year Club; the Knights of Columbus; American Legion Post #369- who will post colors at 7:30 p.m. Sunday evening; Goodfellows Club of East Chicago; Croatian Fraternal Union, Croatian Home, Inc. and St. Stanislaus Church in East Chicago. Lorrayne T. Vest, age 56, of Crown Point and formerly of Munster and Chicago passed away at home on Friday, February 28, 2003. Lorrie attended St. Barbara's High School in Chicago, IL. She was employed by the Lake County Government Center in Crown Point. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Theresa Ryba and her brother, Joseph Ryba, Jr. She is survived by her husband of 31 years, Don; two sons: Brian and Todd of Crown Point; brother, Robert (Marcia) Ryba of Illinois; and two nieces, Judy Ryba (Michael) and Sandra (Angelo) Roncone.

William F. "Bill" Waggle
William F. "Bill" Waggle, 81, went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, February 26, 2003. He was a Lake Station resident for the past 53 years. Bill was a retired truck driver for Scot Lad Foods with 25 years of service. He was a member of the Lake Station FOE #2766 and a former member of the Lake Station Lions Club. He coached Lake Station Babe Ruth baseball and was involved in Little League.
He was preceded in death by Barbara, his loving wife of 49 years. Bill will be missed by his devoted children, Sandra Skofield of Missouri, Jerry Waggle of Kansas City, Missouri, Bill (Debra) Waggle of Valparaiso, Cheryl Neff of Pueblo West, Colorado, Pam (Tom) Paterson of Hobart and Alice Bair of Las Vegas, Nevada; 17 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Etta Oestreich of Valparaiso and Violet (Walter) Handley of Portage. Bill will be missed by numerous nieces and nephews. Not only was he that uncle that you could go to and someone you wanted to be with, he was your friend and your special buddy. At Heaven's Gate he will be greeted by his wife, Barbara and united again with his son, James Waggle, daughter, Wanda Waggle, parents, William and Ali Waggle, sister, Leona Wolfe, brother, Clifford Waggle, brothers-in-law, Bud Wolfe and Charles Oestreich; daughter-in-law, Corinne Waggle and mother-in-law, Eda Quimby.

She was born in Monterey, Indiana on September 4, 1912, daughter of the late Edward and the late Anna Young Reinholt. Married Aug.1, 1979 in Liberty Township, IN to Arnold Wise who preceded 4/27/1990. Also preceded in death by husbands, Chester Roland Jones in 1972 and Ray Eschenbach.
