Bob Filipas had an excellent sense of humor and enjoyed making people laugh, said his daughter, Beth Ann Hemmings.
He enjoyed history and watching old movies, she said.
“Since my Dad was in the Army, he really stuck history by his side and loved telling people stories,” she said. “You could ask him any question and he would know the answer.”
Robert “Bob” Filipas, 71, of Portage, died Jan. 2. He retired from US Steel in 1986 after 23 years of service. He was a US Army veteran, serving from 1959 - 1962.
He loved going to the Portage YMCA, where he was a founding member of the “Table of Knowledge,” she said.
“He enjoyed his friends at the ‘Table of Knowledge’ and seeing the day care kids walk by and saying hi to them,” she said.
He was an excellent cartoonist and could draw anything, Hemmings said.
“My Dad would tell you to draw any sort of line without picking up the pen, and he could draw anything from it. An animal, a person, etc.,” she said. “The parents would be amazed just as much as kids would when he would draw.”
He would draw anywhere he got the chance, she said.
“He would draw in restaurants on napkins, or any place he could find something to draw on,” she said.
He enjoyed taking pictures, bird watching, doing wood carvings and traveling.
Hemmings said her father will be remembered for his sense of humor as well as all his knowledge.
“He was very talented,” she said. “He made you laugh.”
