Elfie Markiewicz was a woman who believed in telling it like it is, said her daughter.

“She was direct and you knew where you stood with her,” said her daughter, Monica Blevens. “She had a very strong sense of right and wrong, and there weren’t many gray areas for her.”

Elfriede “Elfie” Markiewicz, 87, of Portage and formerly of St. John, died July 16. She had been a Realtor in Lake County. She was a member of Nativity of Our Savior Catholic Church, Portage, the Red Hat Society, and attended Bonner Senior Center.

She was preceded in death by her son, Michael Markiewicz.

She was a devout Catholic and attended Mass daily. She was proud of the fact that her brother had been a Catholic bishop, serving in Michigan.

Markiewicz loved to stay active, and was involved in several groups. She also enjoyed bowling and playing pinochle.

“She was always on the go, even until the end,” Blevens said. “She enjoyed going places and staying busy. She always liked having something to look forward to.”

She was an avid reader, and had exchanged hundreds of books with her brother and other members of her family. The books ranged from current favorites to the classics, her daughter said.

Blevens said she admired her mother for her inner strength.

“She raised us kids alone, for the most part, and it was difficult sometimes,” she said. “But she dealt with it, and relied on her faith. She took her religion very seriously and was dedicated to it.”
