Don Nicholson was a friendly and outgoing man who was always around to help people, said his wife of 37 years, Ruth Nicholson.
“He had a lot of friends and knew a lot of people,” she said.
Donald Nicholson, 58, of Valparaiso, died Sept. 10. He had been a bricklayer 36 years for Union Local #4 at also worked for Cole & Associates and the Grand Kankakee Hunt Club.
He also had been a volunteer firefighter in Morgan Township.
Nicholson enjoyed working for the Grand Kankakee Hunt Club, where he took groups out to hunt pheasant and quail with his bird dogs.
He also enjoyed golfing, and taught the couple’s daughter, Kelly, how to golf. He even made golf clubs for himself and others, she said.
He was a devoted father, and loved coaching his daughter’s softball team over the years.
“He never missed a game,” Ruth Nicholson said.
He also was devoted to his young grandson, Louis Martin.
Nicholson was a third generation bricklayer, and was proud of the work he had done around the region. He helped build the Ames Field football stadium in Michigan City as well as the federal courthouse in Hammond.
“He called Ames Field his monument. Every time we went to Michigan City, we went past the stadium,” she said. “He was very proud of the buildings he had built.”
