Thomas McEnterfer was a kind and generous man who was admired by everyone who knew him, said his wife of 65 years, Dee McEnterfer.

“Everyone remarked that he always had a smile,” she said. “He was always willing to help others.”

Thomas McEnterfer, 86, of Valparaiso, died Dec. 30, 2012. He worked for IBM Corporation, retiring as a computer specialist. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Valparaiso.

He enjoyed his work at IBM, and was often sought after by his fellow employees for help, his wife said.

“He was on the forefront of computer technology, and people admired him for the way he could help solve problems,” she said.

He loved to travel, and the family took a tent and camped all the way to the West Coast, she said. Over the years, they upgraded to a trailer, and continued to travel the country. They also took tours to Alaska and Hawaii.

He especially loved traveling the Indiana State Parks.

“He always said the best part of any vacation was planning for it,” she said. “He loved starting the campfire, and would cut his own logs to use in the fire.”

He was helpful and gifted in doing things around the house, she said.

“He was a problem-solver and an inventor,” she said.

He took great pride in his yard, and enjoyed making things like doll high chairs and cradles out of wood for his grandchildren.

“Family was always very important to him,” she said.

The couple were high school sweethearts.

“It’s hard to put into words what a great guy he was,” she said. “He was a good listener, and knew listening was very important. We were sweethearts for a long time.”
