Dorothy Eibel was a kind and generous woman who loved helping others, said her son, Ritchey Eibel.

“She was a wonderful mother,” he said. “She had many friends and was involved in many things.”

Dorothy Eibel, 105, of Merrillville, died June 11. She graduated in 1930 from Purdue University, West Lafayette, where she was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.

She was a home economics teacher with the Ross Township school system and taught at Tolleston High School. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Merrillville and Gary.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Fred Eibel, in 1989.

She grew up on a farm south of Lafayette, Ind., and her mother died when she was a young girl. She was a tomboy, her son said, and she loved riding horses.

Eibel enjoyed volunteer work and was a member of Tri Kappa sorority and PEO.

For years, she made caps and gowns for the babies born in Methodist Hospitals, where she volunteered.

She loved playing bridge and did beautiful needlepoint.

Eibel said his mother was an excellent cook and enjoyed making sauerbraten for her husband in honor of his German heritage.

“She was a great mother, a good Christian and a wonderful friend,” he said.
